Until now, Google had limited its Android N Developer Preview strictly to Nexus devices. However, Google and Sony have announced the expansion of Android N Developer Preview 2 program and the Xperia Z3 is the first non-nexus smartphone to get the official developer preview apart from Google’s Nexus and Pixel devices.
The Android N Preview for Xperia Z3 is currently available only for Xperia Z3 D6603 and the D6653 models. Users with this model of the Xperia Z3 can use the Xperia Companion PC software. The Sony’s developer website states that the Android N Preview can be used to test apps for saving power and memory. The website just goes on to state the benefits of Android N, like multi-window UI, direct reply notifications and more. There are also rumours that the Android N Developer Preview may expand to other non-Nexus smartphones soon.
The features of Android N include split-screen mode, improved notifications, and night mode. If you want to install Android N Developer Preview, you’d need to connect it to a PC and access the Software Repair section in the Sony Xperia Companion app. But don’t forget to back-up all your data, as the ordeal involves a full system re-flash.
