Xiaomi Mi 5s might come with Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technology from Qualcomm

Xiaomi Mi 5 Fingerprint Sensor

Motorola was the first major smartphone brand to introduce fingerprint sensor on a smartphone with the Motorola Atrix. However, the company’s implementation was too complicated, and the phone flopped. Apple quickly picked up the idea and implemented it the right way in the iPhone 5s. Soon, we saw hundreds of smartphones with fingerprint sensors released in the consequent months. Now, smartphones that cost as low as ₹6,000 have fingerprint sensors. Qualcomm quickly introduced its own fingerprint sensing technology.

Dubbed Sense ID, Qualcomm’s fingerprint scanning technology uses ultrasonic waves to detect patterns, ridges, and curves in fingerprints to recognise if the device is being used by an authorised person.  This technology was first used in the LeEco Le Max 2. Now, Xiaomi seems to have decided to use Sense ID fingerprint recognition system in its upcoming high-end smartphone. According to a report, the Mi 5s will use a Sense ID fingerprint scanner into its home button. The best part about this technology is that it can be used in smartphones built using metals or even if the sensor is placed below the display.

The Xiaomi Mi 5s is expected to feature a 5.15-inch 1080p IPS LCD display with 3D Touch, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, up to 6GB RAM, and up to 256GB of internal storage. It will use the same 16-megapixel camera sensor as the Mi 5, but it is expected to be able to record 1080p videos at 120fps. It can also record 4K videos at 30fps. Moreover, the device will replace a 4-megapixel front-facing camera sensor from the Mi 5 to move to a new 8-megapixel sensor for improved image and video quality.
