You might have heard about action cameras from GoPro and Garmin, and more recently, about SJCam as well as a Xiaomi-backed company called Yi. However, there’s a chance that you might haven’t heard from MGCool, a Chinese brand that makes action cameras, portable power banks, and headphones. The company makes some really affordable action cameras that undercut the pricing of similarly-specced cameras from Yi and most other known brands.
MGCool has now launched a new action camera: Explorer 2C. Priced at $149.99 (approximately ₹9,656), it can record 4K videos at 24 frames per second, but more importantly, it now comes with a 2-inch touchscreen display, which makes it a breeze to navigate through the camera’s interface and use all the features. It also comes with a microUSB port for charging and a full-sized HDMI port for watching videos on a TV directly from the camera. The company also claims that the Explorer 2C’s 7-lens setup offers better image quality. The camera comes with a waterproof case, a camera bracket, a bicycle stand, camera base, a clip, an adaptor, and a helmet base.
Apart from these new features, the MGCool Explorer 2C carries over all the features of the Explorer 1S. It uses a 1/2.3-inch IMX078 camera sensor from Sony paired with the new seven-lens setup that can go as wide as 170 degrees. However, you can change the field of view to as low as 70 degrees. It captures still images at a maximum resolution of 20 megapixels. However, we think it might be extrapolating the images since the IMX078 sensor has a native resolution of 12 megapixels. It uses a Novatek NT96660 processor, and comes with Wi-Fi b/g/n for connectivity. The company says that its Android and iOS apps are coming soon for remotely controlling the camera.
The camera has a 1,050mAh Li-Ion battery that can be removed. The company claims that the Explorer 2C can record up to 60 minutes of 4K video or up to 80 minutes of 1080p video. The battery can be charged in just two hours. This camera isn’t available in India officially, but it can be purchased from the company’s official website or through AliExpress and GearBest. MGCool’s rival Yi launched its cameras officially in India earlier this week, but its 4K action camera model costs as high as ₹17,000 in India. In comparison, GoPro’s Hero lineup of action cameras are quite costly. For its price, the Explorer 2C looks like a very good deal.
