WSJ: Apple to announce the iPhone 8 on September 12

According to a new report published by the Wall Street Journal today, Apple will be announcing its next-gen iPhone models on the 12th of September. Unlike previous years, Apple is set to announce three new iPhones this year. In addition to the successors to last year’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the Cupertino-based firm will be unveiling the rumored iPhone 8 as well. A new Apple Watch, as well as a 4K Apple TV box, is also likely to make its debut at the event. If rumors are to be believed, the iPhone 8 will be the most expensive iPhone model yet, with prices starting at over $1,000 (Rs.63,800 approx.).

While the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus are going to be more or less similar to the current iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in terms of design, the iPhone 8 is expected to feature an all-new design with a bezel-less front. The front of the handset will be almost entirely dominated by a large 5.8-inch OLED display. Similar to other “bezel-less” smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the LG G6, Apple too has gotten rid of the Touch ID button on the front. Instead, the iPhone 8 will feature a 3D front-facing sensor that will allow for facial recognition. In terms of the build materials, all the three iPhone models are tipped to feature a metal frame and a glass back, allowing them to support wireless charging.

The new Series 3 Apple Watch models are expected to bring a few new features such as the addition of LTE capability. As for the new Apple TV, rumors suggest it will boast 4K HDR output, making it an ideal companion for the latest 4K televisions on the market.

The keynote on September 12th will reportedly be held at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park. However, if things do not go as planned, Apple is likely to use the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium as the venue for this year’s keynote as well.
