Sony reveals its Android 8.0 Oreo update plans

After announcing three new Android smartphones at its IFA 2017 press conference in Berlin, Sony has shared its Android 8.0 Oreo upgrade plans. Surprisingly, most new Xperia smartphones released in the past year or so has been included in the list of devices eligible to be updated to Android 8.0. In case you haven’t heard yet, Sony announced the first smartphones with Android Oreo out of the box at IFA 2017 – Xperia XZ1 and the Xperia XZ1 Compact.

While no timeframe has been provided, Sony has confirmed that it will be rolling out the Oreo update for the following smartphones:

Most Android OEMs are expected to begin the Android 8.0 Oreo update rollout for their flagship models before the end of the year, so we think it could be possible that a few models such as the Xperia XZ Premium and the Xperia XZs will receive the Oreo update sometime in the fourth quarter of the year. However, Sony hasn’t always been the fastest OEM to update its devices, so we wouldn’t be totally surprised if most Xperia handsets receive the update only by early next year.

Sony has always had a minimal Android skin and that continues with Android 8.0 Oreo. The Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact Android 8.0 UI is largely similar to the previous iteration of the company’s custom Android skin. There are, of course, a few new features, which are likely to make their way at least to flagship models such as the Xperia XZ Premium and the Xperia XZs. More specific details regarding the Oreo update for the devices figuring in Sony’s list will likely be shared closer to commencement of the global rollout.
