Amazon finally launches a waterproof Kindle; you can now read books by the pool

All-New Amazon Kindle Oasis (2017)

How many times have you dreamed of a Kindle that can be used in a hot pool? Well, after years of prayers, Amazon has finally launched a new Kindle e-book reader that has a water-resistant design. So, you can now read books by the pool (or by a lake if you’re that lucky). The all-new Amazon Kindle Oasis has a 7-inch e-ink Paperwhite screen (with 300ppi sharpness), a thin and light body with water-resistant design, and weeks worth of battery life.

Ten years ago, we introduced our first Kindle with the mission of delivering any book every written in 60 seconds or less. With a larger 7-inch, 300 ppi display, waterproof design, the all-new Kindle Oasis is our most advanced Kindle ever. Its thin, light, and waterproof design allows readers to stay engaged in the author’s world in even more ways and places than ever before,” said Dave Limp, Senior Vice President, Amazon Devices.

Amazon has also launched a new cover for the Kindle Oasis. It has a thin design and it snaps perfectly onto the device. The Kindle Oasis wakes up when the cover is opened, similar to flip covers found on modern smartphones. The cover comes in two variants: fabric and leather. The Fabric Cover will be available in Charcoal, Indigo, and Sandstone. The Leather Cover will be available in Black and Merlot.

Amazon Kindle Oasis (2017): Features

The All-New Kindle Oasis features a 7-inch Paperwhite display with E Ink Carta technology and a pixel density of 300ppi, which means that you can read life-like text in almost any lighting condition. Amazon says that its new device has the highest resolution screen on any Kindle. There’s an ambient light sensor inside the e-book reader and you can manually adjust the screen brightness for fine-tuning your reading experience. There’s a new font size as well as bold settings (it now offers five levels of boldness), so you can customise the font as per your liking. Amazon has also added a new feature to invert black and white colours on the display, which would be helpful for readers who suffer from light sensitivity.

Coming to the unique feature of this Kindle, its water resistance, it is IPX8 certified. This means that you can now read books, magazines, and newspapers at more places – beach, hot tub, lake, or a swimming pool – without fearing that water would damage your Kindle. The device has a unique shape with a handle like design on one side, which makes it easier to hold. The other side of the device is just 3mm thin. It is thin and light, weighing 194g, which is 10g thinner than the Kindle Paperwhite. The new Kindle Oasis also comes with fast-charging capability, allowing the device to be fully-charged in less than two hours.

Other than these new features, the All-New Kindle Oasis also comes with a usual set of features that makes Amazon’s Kindle series of ebook readers so successful: Sharing Passages, Smart Lookup, Time To Read, Vocabulary Builder, and Word Wise. You can also subscribe to the Kindle Unlimited service for Rs. 149 per month which gives you access to over one million books. Think of it like Netflix for ebooks.
