We decided to compare three phones, namely the Oppo F5 vs iPhone 5s vs Moto G5S Plus, which may not seem like a fair comparison since the iPhone 5s was released four years ago. But they fall into the same price category and our research tells us Indian smartphone buyers tend to compare these phones, especially when they’re considering exploring the Apple ecosystem. But is the risk worth it? Let’s take a look at which the best phone among the three is.
Oppo F5 vs iPhone 5s vs Moto G5S Plus: Price in India
The iPhone 5s was released in September 2013 and therefore may be difficult to source – while it was originally priced at ?17,999, its lowest price we could find online was at ?24,500. We’re guessing this is the case because of the shortage of available stock. Comparatively, the Oppo F5 was released in October this year and its 4GB 32GB variant is priced at ?19,990 (the phone also comes in a 6GB 64GB version). The Moto G5S Plus was released in August 2017 and is currently priced at ?15,999 and is, therefore, the least expensive of the three.
Oppo F5 vs iPhone 5s vs Moto G5S Plus: Display
The Oppo F5 comes with a 6-inch LTPS IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2160 and a pixel density of 402ppi. It is the only phone that offers a wide 18:9 aspect ratio since the other two phones offer 16:9 standard aspect ratio. The iPhone 5s offers a resolution of 640 x 1136 pixels on its 4-inch screen and a density of 326ppi. The Moto G5S Plus, on the other hand, has a 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 and 401ppi pixel density.
Oppo F5 vs iPhone 5s vs Moto G5S Plus: Performance and Battery Life
The Oppo F5 and G5S Plus both run on Android – while the Moto phone offers closer to a stock experience, the Oppo phone runs on a proprietary Android fork (ColorOS 3.2). Both are currently at version 7.1 (Android Nougat). The iPhone 5s runs on iOS 7 but is upgradable to version 11.2 – but we recommend that you read up on Apple slowing down older iPhones before you upgrade. Of course, it’s a bad idea to ignore updates since they also add improvements, fix bugs and have security patches. But it’s not uncommon for iPhone owners to ignore iOS updates.
The Oppo F5 runs on a MediaTek MT6763T Helio P23 octa-core 2.5GHz processor, with a Mali-G71 MP2 GPU for graphics processing. The iPhone 5s, on the other hand, hands over all processing work to Apple’s very own A7 dual-core 1.3GHz Cyclone SoC which is paired with a PowerVR G6430 GPU. The Moto G5S Plus packs a surprise under the hood – it comes with a Snapdragon 625 octa-core 2.0GHz chip with an Adreno 506 GPU and therefore gets our vote for the best processor.
In terms of memory, the iPhone comes with 1GB RAM and 16GB onboard memory with no possibility of expandable storage, unlike the other two phones in this comparison. The Oppo F5 offers 4GB RAM paired with 32GB of internal memory, with support for 256GB via microSD. The Moto G5S Plus offers 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM with storage expansion allowed up to 256GB. Here too, the Moto G5S Plus races ahead of the competition.
In terms of battery life, the Oppo F5 offers a 3200mAh cell whereas the iPhone 5s comes with a 1560mAh battery. The G5S Plus comes with a 3000mAh power unit.
Oppo F5 vs iPhone 5s vs Moto G5S Plus: Camera
The Oppo F5 comes with a 16MP f/1.8 rear camera which supports phase detection autofocus. The iPhone 5s has an 8MP f/2.2 camera on the back and the Moto G5S Plus comes with a dual camera setup, offering a twin array of 13MP f/2.0 cameras on the back, which allows beautiful photographs with bokeh effects. While the F5 and the 5s allow full HD video (1080p) recording at 30fps, the G5S Plus lets users take quad HD (2160p) videos.
The Oppo F5 lives up to its selfie expert tag by offering a 20MP f/2.0 front shooter, obliterating the competition at least on the front. In comparison, the iPhone 5s comes with a 1.2MP f/2.4 front camera whereas the G5S Plus offers an 8MP f/2.0 selfie snapper with a LED flash for great images.
Oppo F5 vs iPhone 5s vs Moto G5S Plus: Verdict
While the iPhone 5s got its wind knocked out early in the comparison, it was a close call between the Oppo F5 and the Moto G5S Plus. But since the Motorola handset took the lead in terms of processor, rear camera, internal storage, and of course pricing, we found ourselves a winner. The Moto G5S Plus offers maximum value for money when compared with the Oppo F5 and the iPhone 5s.
