At the ongoing CES 2018 expo in Las Vegas, LG has unveiled a huge 5K monitor with all the bells and whistles one would expect from an ultra high-end monitor. The monitor uses a 5K IPS LCD panel with 98-percent DCI-P3 colour gamut. The monitor also features a single Thunderbolt 3 cable for video signal and power, and HDR capability, complete with VESA’s DisplayHDR certification. The company had mentioned about bringing three new monitors to CES 2018. Let’s have a look at all the features and technical specifications of the LG 34WK95U.
LG 34WK95U: Features, specifications
The LG 34WK95U uses the company’s “Nano IPS” LCD technology with 5K resolution (5120 x 2160 pixels), 60Hz refresh rate, and an aspect ratio of 21:9, making it an ultra-wide monitor. The company had released multiple 21:9 monitors in the past, but none of them were high dynamic range (HDR) compatible. The LG 34WK95U is certified by VESA’s DisplayHDR 600 standard for consistent HDR performance. It means that the monitor can reach a peak brightness of up to 600 nits while displaying HDR content and can sustain a brightness of 350 nits during full-screen long duration HDR playback.
The Nano IPS technology that LG is talking about is very similar to Samsung’s QLED lineup where pixels are coated with nanometer-sized particles to absorb excess light wavelengths, resulting in better colour volume and more life-like colours. The monitor would be a great addition to movie and image editing professionals since it can cover 98 percent of the DCI-P3 colour gamut. Since the monitor features a Thunderbolt 3 compatible USB Type-C port, it can take audio and video signals from a compatible PC or laptop through a single cable. Not only this, the same cable can also charge a compatible device at the same time, making the entire setup extremely clean.
The monitor also features extremely thin bezels on all four sides, so creating a multi-monitor setup out of multiple LG 34WK95U won’t be a problem at all. It also features LG’s slim Edge-ArcLine stand.
LG 34WK95U: Availability, pricing
LG has announced the availability or pricing of the 34WK95U, but it should be available later this year with a price tag of more than $1,400 since the only other monitor from LG that features 4K or more resolution is currently selling for $1,400 in the US.
