Samsung’s much-talked-about foldable phone has reportedly been displayed in a privately held meeting at CES 2018. At the event, the South Korean giant introduced a variety of consumer durables such as smart TVs, home appliances, and more. However, what was not visible to the public eye, Samsung revealed the folding smartphone to select clients at CES 2018.
In addition to showcasing the foldable smartphone, Samsung has also reportedly shared the launch timeline with the participants at the private meeting. According to a report from South Korean news website ETNews, one of the sources said,”Samsung Display said it has developed a 7.3-inch foldable panel with plans to start production later this year.”
Not just the foldable phone, at CES 2018, Samsung boss also revealed that the company is going to unveil the Galaxy S9 series at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018.
Interestingly, this is not the first time when Samsung has been reported to show the foldable smartphone privately. At MWC 2017, last year, the company showed the device in its early stages while at CES 2018, it showcased the upgraded version of the same device. Samsung has reportedly invited select clients to the private meeting, one of the sources said,”Last year, MWC limited the scope of the disclosure to a fairly strict level, but this time, we decided to set the target for the release somewhat broader and responded to it.”
According to the available information concerning the foldable smartphone, it is said to have curvature of 1R(0.1 mm) for inward folding and curvature of 5R(0.1 mm) for outward folding. A previous report about the phone in BusinessKorea cited that Samsung could be using plastic for attaining the flexibility.
Speculated name: Galaxy X
Keeping up with the rumours that have accumulated in the past about the foldable phone, it could be named as Samsung Galaxy X. The company had earlier filed several patents for foldable smartphones. At the time of Galaxy S8 lineup, Samsung’s mobile chief DJ Koh had announced that the company is planning to introduce a foldable smartphone in the Note series by the starting of 2018.

Looking at how things are panning out for Samsung’s speculated foldable smartphone, the company wants to bring out the device before its rival Apple, who has also filed patents for a similar foldable design. Apple has been reported to collaborate with LG Display for the foldable phone.
