Smartron, the Indian technology OEM specialising in smartphones, convertible tablets, and IoT devices, has revealed that it plans to launch a flagship-class smartphone in 2018. As of this publishing, the domestic technology brand already has two smartphones targeting the upper and lower mid-range segments, with its latest budget entrant, the Smartron t.phone P, slated to go on sale exclusively through Flipkart on January 17.
Speaking with tech bloggers at the Hyderabad office, Narsi Reddy Posham, the Co-founder and Managing Director of Smartron, informed that the company is currently working with Qualcomm to integrate the upcoming Snapdragon 845 SoC into the upcoming smartphone. Although the flagship device under development at the company’s Bangalore and Hyderabad locations hasn’t been named yet, Mr Posham stated that it will incorporate hardware specifications comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S9.
The Smartron Co-founder also name-dropped the OnePlus 5T while speaking about the upcoming phone, hinting that the company might pursue the same strategy as the Chinese player by offering flagship-class hardware specifications (sans ancillary features and gimmicks) at a lower price range. Interestingly, Smartron has already distinguished itself as the only Indian OEM to forge a partnership with Qualcomm, with one of the facets of the partnerships involving the Amercian chip maker’s Wi-Fi mesh platform.
Although the company hasn’t specified any release window for the flagship phone this side of 2018, we expect more details to pour in sometime around the Mobile World Congress 2018 that’s slated to be held during the last week of February.
