Sony announces the XAV-AX5000 car infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support

Last year Sony launched the XAV-AX100 car infotainment system with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Now, at CES 2018 event, the company has launched the successor to XAV-AX100, the XAV-AX5000.

According to Sony, the XAV-AX5000 has an ‘astonishingly flat’ touchscreen display, which basically means that it has less bezels and that the display is flush to the surface. The head unit comes with a 6.95-inch capacitive touchscreen, compared to the resistive touchscreen technology on most of the other car infotainment systems that are currently available for purchase. There are also a couple of physical keys below the display for easy UI navigation; the keys are made out of aluminium. Sony also says that the XAV-AX5000 head unit boots up “soon after ignition is turned on.”

The Sony XAV-AX5000 has 4-channel speaker output; it can provide each channel with 55W of peak power. However, the actual RMS output will be much lower than 55W. The infotainment system also offers three pre-outs, in case you wish to install more than one amplifier for high-power input speakers. Also worth mentioning is that the XAV-AX5000 does not come with a CD/DVD player, due to which, it has a much smaller chassis. According to Sony, the compact footprint will allow for an easy installation.

The Sony XAV-AX5000 has two USB inputs for external device connection like pen drive and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. As for the wireless connectivity, the infotainment system has  Bluetooth with SBC and AAC audio codec support. The head unit also offers rear camera input, and steering remote control for compatibility with vehicles having a rear camera, and steering-mounted audio controls. Additionally, the Sony XAV-AX5000 comes with features like FLAC playback support, Dynamic Stage Organizer, and Sirius XM Radio.

The Sony XAV-AX5000 is priced at $429, and it will go on sale in North America in the spring. The company has not yet revealed any information on pricing and availability of this infotainment system for India. However, we strongly believe that the XAV-AX5000 will be launched in India just like its predecessor. We expect the AX-AX5000 to be priced around Rs. 32,999 in India upon its launch.
