[CES 2018] Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet gets redesign, larger screen and bumped up specs

Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Tablet 2018

After Lenovo unveiled its new line of ThinkPad laptops at CES 2018, the company followed up with the announcement of a new refresh of the ThinkPad X1 Tablet. The tablet would mark the 3rd generation of the ThinkPad X1 Tablet lineup and comes with a massive upgrade in its specs list. These include a larger display, a faster and more powerful processor, better GPU and an all-around better aesthetic.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet: Features, specifications

The ThinkPad X1 Tablet Gen3 combats many of the limitations that the previous versions had while retaining the aspects that make it desirable. One of these upgrades comes in the form of its processor. The first-generation tablet had an Intel Y-series Core processor. This time we get Intel’s 8th Generation quad-core Core i7-8650U CPU. This comes with the integrated UHD Graphics 620 iGPU. As for memory, we get up to 16GB of LPDDR3 RAM and up to a massive 1TB of NVMe M.2 SSD storage.

The most impressive improvement is the larger screen that now comes in at 13-inches with a 3000×2000 resolution, retaining the 3:2 aspect ratio. It carries over the support for 10-point multi-touch and the included stylus. It comes with the same detachable keyboard and an improved kickstand over last year’s model. This time, however, we don’t find any USB Type-A ports. We instead get two Thunderbolt 3 ports, with one of them supporting USB PowerDelivery 3.0. Most other specifications are pretty much the same as the older model, with a fingerprint scanner, a rear camera and a front webcam, a microSD card reader and a headphone jack. For wireless connectivity, the new ThinkPad X1 Tablet comes with an Intel 802.11ac Wi-Fi and support for Bluetooth 4.2.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet Gen3 has a 42Whr battery with an estimated 9.5 hours of battery life. This is a decent upgrade from the 36.4Whr battery of the previous year’s model. However, because of the larger display, the actual life of the tablet is expected to be pretty much the same. The tablet also comes with an integrated app for Alexa.

Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Tablet: Price, availability

The tablet will be available for purchase in the US in March of this year and will come with a price tag starting at $1,599 (approximately Rs. 1,01,992).
