Announced back in July last year, RED, better known for its high-end video products, has revealed that the Hydrogen One smartphone, its first, can be expected to ship sometime this summer, and “Unlocked” pre-orders will ship before that. Jim Jannard, RED’s CEO and founder, made the announcement in a post on the company’s forums, and also shared a few specifications of the upcoming Hydrogen One smartphone.
To refresh your memory, the RED Hydrogen One smartphone features a 5.7-inch 1440p display, which can display 2D and 4V (holographic) images, which Jannard says, is “better than 3D”, and can be viewed without any additional glasses. The phone is capable of shooting 3D or 4V (holographic) content using its on-board cameras itself, and can playback multi-channel spatial sound from the phone’s internal stereo speakers or headphones. The RED Hydrogen One uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835x processor and features a 4500mAh battery. The phone has dual SIM card slots, a headphone jack, and USB-C connectivity. The phone also supports add-on modules like external batteries or even a ‘cinema grade camera module’ using a pogo pin system on the back of the phone.
With regards to carrier support, without divluging specifics, he said that carrier support for the Hydrogen One is “unprecedented” and “as good as it gets”. He says the company has been showing prototypes of the phone to content producing partners in preparation for the Hydrogen network, a place to find 4V content online. On the topic of sharing 4V content, he said that users will be able to set up their own channel on the Hydrogen network, and that the company would announce their social media partners soon.
The phone is just “slightly bigger than other 5.7-inch cellphones”, and also “just a tad thicker”, and will weigh about a couple of ounces more than the average 5.7-inch cell phone, he said. Jannard says that the company will probably give pre-order customers a preview of the phone sometime in April.
The base model of the RED Hydrogen One is priced at a whopping $1,195 (approximately ₹77,000), while the titanium finish model will cost you $1,595 (approximately ₹1,03,000).
