Samsung has finally unveiled the successors to the 850 series drives that it had launched back in 2014. The new 860 PRO and 860 EVO SATA SSDs are claimed to be the industry’s first consumer solid-state drives to utilize V-NAND technology. For faster performance, the 64-layer V-NAND is combined with a new MJX controller and LPDDR4 mobile DRAM.
The new 860 PRO and 860 EVO SSDs combine the latest 512Gb and 256Gb 64-layer V-NAND, up to 4GB LPDDR4 mobile DRAM and a new MJX controller to elevate the user experience for both consumers and businesses,” said Un-Soo Kim, senior vice president of Brand Product Marketing, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung will continue to fuel meaningful innovations in the consumer SSD space and drive growth of the overall memory industry for years to come.
Samsung 860 PRO
The Samsung 860 PRO series comes in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. It is available in a 2.5-inch form factor, making it compatible with PCs, notebooks, workstations, and NAS. All 860 PRO drives are claimed to deliver maximum sequential read speeds of up to 560 MB/s and maximum sequential write speeds of up to 530 MB/s. Random read speeds go up to 100k IOPS, while random writes can touch 90k IOPS. Endurance ratings range from 300 TBW for the 256GB drive all the way up to 4800 TBW for the 4TB drive. The Samsung 860 PRO SSDs will be going on sale in India later this month for a starting price Rs.12,200.
Samsung 860 EVO
The Samsung 860 EVO series drives come in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. These drives will be available in a 2.5-inch form-factor for PCs and notebooks, as well as mSATA and M.2 form-factors. In terms of performance, Samsung claims the 860 EVO series drives hit maximum sequential read speeds of 550 MB/s and write speeds of 520 MB/s. While these numbers may not be very different from the previous-gen 850 EVO drives, Samsung says the enhanced intelligent TurboWrite technology allows the new drives to deliver up to six times longer sustained performance than their predecessors. As you would expect, the more affordable 860 EVO SSDs aren’t as impressive as the 860 PRO drives when it comes to endurance. The 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB 860 EVO drives have an endurance rating of 150 TBW, 300 TBW, 600 TBW, 1200 TBW, and 2400 TBW, respectively. The 860 EVO SSDs will be available starting this month for a starting price of Rs.8,750. Just like the 860 PRO drives, the 860 EVO series SSDs will come backed by a 5-year warranty.
