With the expansion of the smartphone market and manufacturers launching phones every other month, it has become a herculean task for the buyers to choose the best in their budget. Especially when it comes to the under 15k segment that now holds a variety of smartphones hailing from different manufacturers. Brands like Xiaomi have built their trust over time in the minds of Indian consumers, but Samsung has stayed longer in the market and then there is Nokia that just pulled a glorified comeback to the smartphone after a gap of several years. Keeping the rising popularity and inventory of products by these three brands, we thought of comparing three popular smartphones from them – Xiaomi Redmi 5 vs Nokia 5 vs Samsung Galaxy J7.
Redmi 5 vs Nokia 5 vs Samsung Galaxy J7: Price in India
The Nokia 5 debuted in February 2017 and is currently retailing at Rs. 11,299 for the 3GB RAM/16GB storage variant while the Xiaomi Redmi 5 is yet to launch in India and its expected pricing according to the rumours is Rs. 10,999 for the 3GB RAM/16GB storage model. The oldest in the lot is the Samsung Galaxy J7 that debuted three years ago in June 2015 and is still priced at 10,990 for the 16GB storage and 16GB storage and 1.5GB RAM variant. Given the pricing, the Nokia 5 takes the cherry with its RAM capacity and updated outlook in comparison to the Galaxy J7 that is old and has way too less RAM capacity to perform better. The Redmi 5 is almost on the same level, but the device is yet to launch in India and its pricing could ultimately be more than the Nokia 5. So, for now, the Nokia 5 is the most viable option in the lot.

The Redmi 5 is powered by a 1.8GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC clubbed with 2GB of RAM and 16GB internal storage that is also expandable up to 128GB via microSD card
While both the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Nokia5 offer the same RAM and storage capacity, the Samsung Galaxy J7 is legs behind. All the three smartphones provide dual-SIM connectivity.
On the software front, the Redmi 5 runs Android 7.1 Nougat-based MIUI 9, the Nokia 5 was launched with Android 7.1 Nougat out-of-the-box but it recently started receiving Android 8.0 Oreo update. Taking a look at all the performance comparison points, the Nokia 5 yet again wins the segment with the latest Android version Oreo onboard alongside regular updates from Nokia. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 yet again stands close in the competition with its Snapdragon 450 SoC but overall Nokia 5 looks better in terms of specs. The Galaxy J7 is too old to even stand a chance in front of the other two.

Redmi 5 vs Nokia 5 vs Samsung Galaxy J7: Verdict
Taking all the segments into account, the Nokia 5 seems to be the best buy among the three smartphones. Given its superior camera, performance, software and Nokia’s good track record for offering timely updates, the Nokia 5 is the winner. The Redmi 5 is yet to debut in India, so if you are looking for a phone with better battery and display, then it could also be an ideal choice. On the contrary, the Samsung Galaxy J7 is quite an old phone to stand against the other two, but Samsung has still not brought down its pricing, and it still is available on the market at the same pricing as the Nokia 5 and Redmi 5.
