There are a bunch of interesting handsets for sale under the psychologically important Rs.10,000 price barrier in India. While the most popular handsets in this price bracket is usually a Xiaomi device, it is pertinent to note that there are several other players vying for a pie of this high volume, low margins segment. In today’s comparison, let us compare two handsets from this segment to a popular Xiaomi device – also from this price bracket. The handsets involved in today’s specs comparison are the Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Lite, the Nokia 2 and the Samsung Galaxy On7 Pro.

The Redmi Y1 Lite features an aluminium body – which is not bad at all for a handset in this price range. The phone gets a 5.5-inch, IPS LCD display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. The display is in the standard 16:9 aspect ratio and gets a PPI density of 267. The phone also gets Corning Gorilla Glass  3 for scratch protection.

The Nokia 2 gets a smaller 5-inch LTPS IPS LCD display. While not made entirely of aluminium, the Nokia 2 does get an aluminium frame and a plastic back. Coming back to the display, the screen is in the 16:9 aspect ratio and has a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. The Nokia 2 also gets Corning Gorilla Glass 3 coating for scratch resistance.

The Galaxy On7 Pro from Samsung gets a plastic body and features a 5.5-inch TFT display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels in a 16:9 aspect ratio. This translates to a PPI density of 294. The On7 doesn’t seem to come with any sort of display protection layer.

Let us now take a look at the hardware specs of these three devices, followed by a quick glance at their software versions.

The Redmi Y1 Lite as evident from its name is a mellowed down version of the more expensive Redmi Y1. The Redmi Y1 Lite finds itself powered by the entry-level Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset that houses a quad core Cortex-A53 CPU and the Adreno 308 GPU for graphics. The phone comes in a single 16GB/2GB RAM version. On the software side of things, the Redmi Y1 Lite runs MIU 9 on top of an Android 7 Nougat core.

The Nokia 2 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 chip that houses a quad-core Cortex A7 processor clocked at 1.3GHz. The phone comes with just 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage space. Thankfully, the handset does support memory expansion using microSD cards. The handset runs a near-stock version of Android 7.1.1 Nougat and is slated to receive an official update to Android 8.0 Oreo.

The Samsung Galaxy On7 gets an entry-level Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chip that houses a quad-core Cortex A53 processor clocked at 1.2GHz. The SoC also houses the Adreno 306 GPU for graphics. The phone comes in a single version that gets 16GB of storage and 2GB of RAM. The handset runs a relatively outdated version of Android (version 6.0 Marshmallow) with no signs of an official update to newer versions.

Let us now take a closer look at the imaging capabilities of these entry-level handsets.

The Xiaomi Y1 Lite incorporates a 13-megapixel sensor as its primary camera. This lens boasts of an aperture of f/2.2 and supports phase detection autofocus and has an LED flash for low light imaging. The rear camera can record full HD videos at 30fps. At the front, the phone features a 5-megapixel shooter with f/2.0 aperture.

The Nokia2 gets an 8-megapixel camera at the rear with autofocus and LED flash for low light situations.  Video recording is limited to 720p resolution at 30fps. At the front, the phone gets a 5-megapixel camera that can also record 720p videos.

The Samsung Galaxy On7 Pro gets a 13-megapixel, f/2.1 autofocus camera with LED flash for low light scenarios. This camera is also capable of full HD video recording at 30fps. At the front, the On7 Pro gets a 5-megapixel f/2.2 shooter.

Let us now check out the pricing details of each of these devices as of February 6, 2018

  • The Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Lite will set you back by Rs. 6,999. It is, however, only available currently via a flash sale.
  • The lowest price we could find for the  Nokia 2  was Rs.6,499.
  • The Samsung Galaxy On7 is listed on sale for Rs.7,490

Clearly, going by the spec sheet and pricing of these devices, once again, the Xiaomi Y1 Lite makes for a more sensible buy. The Nokia 2 would have been a much better handset if it had more RAM and internal storage. The On7, on the other hand, is way too overpriced for what it offers at this price.
