Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC is rumored to announce its next flagship smartphone sometime next month. The smartphone’s codename as well as key specifications were revealed recently by HTC leakster and ROM developer @LlabTooFeR. A new report has surfaced online today, shedding some more light on the design of the upcoming HTC flagship handset.
HTC U12: Minor Design Tweaks Tipped
The exclusive report from HTCSource claims the HTC U12 will be similar to the U11 and U11+ smartphones in the design department but will have a few unique characteristics as well. According to the report, HTC U12 will utilize the company’s Liquid Surface design language with a metal frame in the middle and curved glass on both the front and back. The fingerprint sensor will be placed at the back of the phone, similar to the U11+. The HTC U12 will come with an IP68 certification as well, again identical to the U11+. A dual-camera setup has also been mentioned in the new report. As for the key differences, the report only mentions a new matte white finish. We hope to find out more about the smartphone’s design in the coming weeks. As with any major smartphone, leaked renders and live images are highly likely to surface online as we head closer to the rumored announcement timeframe.
HTC U12: Rumored Specifications
Going by a recent leak, the HTC U12 will feature a 5.99-inch display with Quad HD+ resolution and possibly 18:9 aspect ratio. HTC has so far been using Super LCD panels on its flagship models, so there is a good chance that the U12 will also use a Super LCD 6 and not an OLED display panel. Powering the HTC 12, codenamed “Imagine”, will be Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor with Adreno 630 GPU. In the memory department, HTC U12 is tipped to arrive in multiple configurations with up to 6GB of RAM and 256GB of built-in storage. The variant headed to India will possibly come with a Hybrid dual-SIM configuration.
The HTC U12 is going to be HTC’s first flagship smartphone after the One M9+ to come equipped with a dual-camera setup at the back. HTC is expected to use a 12MP primary sensor and a 16MP secondary sensor, both likely sourced from Sony. For selfies, the HTC U12 will feature an 8MP resolution camera on the front. The smartphone will come with the Face Unlock feature as well, although it remains to be seen if HTC adopts a more advanced facial recognition technology similar to Face ID on the iPhone X.
In terms of battery life, the U12 is expected to be better than its predecessor but not quite as good as the U11+. The handset is rumored to pack a 3420mAh capacity battery, smaller than the 3930mAh unit inside the U11+.
On the software front, HTC U12 will run on the Android 8.0 Oreo operating system out of the box, with the Sense 10 UI overlay on top. The flagship smartphone is said to offer full treble support, which means owners can expect major OS upgrades to be rolled out much sooner than before. HTC U12 will also include Edge Sense 2.0, which confirms that the smartphone will retain the same “squeezable” frame as the U11 and U11+.
HTC U12: Release Date, Price
As mentioned above, the HTC U12 is rumored to be released sometime in April. No exact announcement date has been confirmed yet but if HTC does indeed plan to release the U12 next month, an official unveiling is likely in early April. The smartphone’s pricing also remains a complete mystery at this point. When it comes to India, HTC has always managed to price its flagship smartphones slightly on the higher side. We are hoping that the U12 will be priced more sensibly compared to the company’s previous flagship models.
