
Just days after making the phone official at MWC 2018, Samsung has announced the launch of the Galaxy S9 and the S9 Plus in India. Both the devices are slated to go on sale starting March 16 in India. With the first of the flagship phones from Samsung about to officially launch in India, it would be interesting to see how they fare against the current crop of flagship-class handsets on sale in the country. In this article, we compare the brand new Galaxy S9 to the Google Pixel 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus.
Samsung Galaxy S9 v Google Pixel 2 vs Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus: Design, Display
The Samsung Galaxy S9 is an evolution of the Samsung Galaxy S8’s design. Visually, it is quite similar to the handset it replaces. The Galaxy S9 features an aluminium frame mated to glass-clad front and back panels. The display on the Galaxy S9 is a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1440 x 2960 pixels in the 18.5:9 aspect ratio. This translates to a PPI density score of 570. Additionally, the display is also HDR10 compliant.
The Google Pixel 2 also features an aluminium body and partial glass coating at the rear. The front glass is protected by a Gorilla Glass 5 layer. The display itself happens to be of the AMOLED type and measures 5-inches across with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. This is, of course, in the standard 16:9 aspect ratio. The display is also quite sharp thanks to a PPI score of 441.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is the larger screened cousin of the Galaxy S8 from 2017. This handset gets a glass coating at the front and the rear. The display is a Super AMOLED panel that measures 6.2-inches across with a resolution of 1440 x 2960 pixels. This panel is also HDR10 compatible and is in the 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The larger display means that the handset scores a little less on the PPI density front. The number, however, is still impressive at 529 PPI.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 that would be sold in India will use the Exynos 9810 SoC that houses an Octa-core (4×2.7 GHz Mongoose M3 & 4×1.8 GHz Cortex-A55) processor. The phone gets 4GB of RAM and would be sold in 64GB and 256GB versions in India. There is also a 128GB version that could be launched later. The phone gets a 3,000 mAh battery as well.
The Google Pixel 2 finds itself powered by the Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 SoC that houses an octa core Octa-core (4×2.35 GHz Kryo & 4×1.9 GHz Kryo) CPU. For graphics, the phone gets the Adreno 540 GPU. The phone comes in two versions 64GB and 128GB. Both the versions get 4GB of RAM. The phone features a 2700 mAh battery.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus sold in India uses the Exynos 8895 chipset from 2017. The handset houses an octa core Octa-core (4×2.3 GHz Mongoose M2 & 4×1.7 GHz Cortex-A53) processor. The phone is sold only in the 64GB option in India and comes with 4GB of RAM. The S8 Plus comes with a 3500 mAh battery.
Samsung Galaxy S9 v Google Pixel 2 vs Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus: Camera
The Samsung Galaxy S9 features a 12-megapixel camera with a unique dual aperture feature. Depending on the situation, you can choose between f/1.5 and f/2.4 apertures on the fly. The camera also supports dual pixel phase detection autofocus, OIS, and LED flash for low light imaging. At the front, the phone gets an 8-megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture. The primary camera records videos in 4K resolution at 60fps. The front camera can record 1440p videos at 30fps.
The Google Pixel 2 gets a 12.2-megapixel camera with f/1.8 aperture with support for dual Pixel phase detection autofocus. The primary camera also supports OIS, laser autofocus and dual-LED flash. The front camera is an 8-megapixel unit with a f/2.4 lens and support for 1080p video recording. The primary camera at the rear records 4K videos at 30fps in the highest setting.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus gets a 12-megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture and dual pixel phase detection autofocus. This camera also boasts of OIS and LED flash for low light imaging. At the front, there is an 8-megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture and autofocus. As for video recording, the primary camera records 4K videos at 30fps while the front camera tops out at 1440p videos at 30fps.
Samsung Galaxy S9 v Google Pixel 2 vs Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus: Price in India
The prices of the new Galaxy S9 and the S9 Plus were announced just yesterday in India. The 64GB variant of the Samsung Galaxy S9 has been priced at Rs. 57,900, while the 256GB model will set you back by Rs. 65,900.
The Google Pixel 2 is also offered in two versions in India. The 128GB version will set you back by around Rs.57,000 while the 64GB version has been priced at Rs. 49,999.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is sold in a single 64GB version in India and is priced at Rs. 58,900.
Looking at the spec sheet and the pricing, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is clearly your best bet since it is the newer device.
