
Nokia and Samsung – both launched a bunch of new smartphones at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress at Barcelona. While Samsung came up with the successors to the Galaxy S8 series, Nokia announced the successor to the Nokia 8 – the Nokia 8 Sirocco at MWC. Nokia also announced a bunch of other smartphones (and a feature phone) at MWC. Those handsets, however, are not the focus of today’s article. In this article, we compare the new Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus and the Nokia 8 Sirocco to last year’s Samsung flagship – the Samsung Galaxy S8. Note that of these three handsets, only two handsets are currently available for purchase in India.
Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus vs Nokia 8 Sirocco vs Samsung Galaxy S8: Design, display
The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus features an aluminium frame flanked by glass-clad front and rear panels. The handset boasts of a 6.2-inch Super AMOLED display in the 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The display has a resolution of 1440 x 2960 pixels – endowing it with a PPI density score of 529.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco gets a stainless steel frame and has glass coating both at the front and the rear. The display is a P-OLED capacitive touchscreen in the standard 16:9 aspect ratio. The panel measures 5.5-inches across and boasts of a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels thereby ending up with a PPI density score of 534.
The Samsung Galaxy S8, the oldest handset in this comparison is similar in design to the S9 Plus and gets an aluminium frame mated to front and rear glass panels. The display, being a Samsung, happens to be a Super AMOLED panel that measures 5.8-inches across in the 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The resolution of this display is 1440 x 2960 pixels with a PPI density of 570 – making this the sharpest display among the devices in this comparison.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus that would be sold in India will be powered by Samsung’s in-house Exynos 9810 SoC. This SoC houses an Octa-core (4×2.7 GHz Mongoose M3 & 4×1.8 GHz Cortex-A55) processor. For graphics, the phone uses the Mali-G72 MP18 GPU. The S9 plus will come in 64GB, and 256GB options in India with the option to expand the memory further using microSD cards. All these versions also get 6GB of RAM.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco is powered by last year’s flagship SoC for Android smartphones – Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835. This SoC houses an octa core processor (4×2.5 GHz Kryo & 4×1.8 GHz Kryo) and also integrates 128GB of storage with 6GB of RAM. For graphics, the phone gets the Adreno 540 GPU. The Nokia 8 Sirocco also gets a microSD card slot for memory expansion.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 sold in India uses the Exynos 8895 SoC from 2017 and is offered only in the 64GB version with 4GB of RAM in India. This version also gets the Mali-G71 MP20 GPU for graphics. The Galaxy S8 also supports dual SIM cards as well as memory expansion using microSD cards.
Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus vs Nokia 8 Sirocco vs Samsung Galaxy S8: Hardware
The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus features a dual camera setup at the rear that consists of twin 12-megapixel camera units. The primary 12-megapixel camera uses a unique dual aperture feature that lets users choose between f/1.5 aperture for low light situations and f/2.4 aperture for imaging during bright conditions. It is also a wide-angle lens. The secondary camera is a telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture. Thanks to these lenses the phone supports 2X optical zoom as well. Other features include phase detection autofocus and OIS along with LED flash for low light situations. The S9 Plus also supports 4K video recording at 60fps using the primary camera, while the secondary camera – which happens to be an 8-megapixel, f/1.7-unit – can record videos at 1440p at 30fps. Additionally, the phone also supports slow motion videos at 960fps.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco also gets a dual camera setup at the rear as its primary camera consisting of twin 12-megapixel sensors at the rear. The primary 12-megapixel camera has an aperture of f/1.75, while the secondary camera has an aperture of f/2.6/. The primary camera also supports OIS. These cameras also support dual phase detection autofocus, Carl Zeiss optics, and dual led dual-tone flash. The Nokia 8 Sirocco supports 4K video recording at 30fps using the primary camera and 1080p video recording using the front camera that happens to be a 5-megapixel, f/2.0 unit.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 from 2017 came with a single 12-megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture as its primary camera. This camera supports phase detection autofocus, OIS, and LED flash for low light images. At the front, the phone gets an 8-megapixel, f/1.7 lens. The s8 can record 4K videos at 30fps using the primary camera in the highest setting while the front camera can record 1440p videos at 30fps in the highest setting.

In India, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus has been priced as follows
- Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus 64GB: Rs. 64,900
- Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus 256GB: Rs. 72,900
The Samsung Galaxy S8, on the other hand, will set you back by Rs. 53,900 if you buy a new handset right now. Additionally, if you are interested in the successor to the S8, the S9 can be bought for Rs. 57,900 for the base version. Therefore, if you are interested in buying a new phone, either the Galaxy S9 or the S9 Plus makes a lot more sense than the S8. However, if you already own an S8 or an S8 Plus, there is no compelling reason to upgrade.
The price of the Nokia 8 Sirocco has not yet been officially announced for India.
