The Redmi Note 5 Pro is the latest phone from Xiaomi, which also released the Redmi Note 5 at the same time. And Asus too had a surprise for 2018, launching the Zenfone 5 (2018), the Zenfone 5Z, and the Zenfone 5 Lite at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month. So these are excellent phones, but how would they fare in a comparison against a phone that released last year, but is still really impressive in terms of specs and features? We’re talking about the Mi A1, and there is only one way to find out which phone is the best among the Redmi Note 5 Pro, the Asus Zenfone 5 (2018) and the Mi A1: a shootout. The Redmi Note 5 was announced on February 14 this year and went on sale on the 22nd of the same month. The device is currently priced at Rs.13,999. The 2018 version of the ASUS Zenfone 5 was revealed a week ago and is expected to cost about Rs.14,999 when it goes on sale. The Mi A1, in comparison, was launched in September 2017 and is currently priced the same as the Redmi Note 5 Pro: Rs.13,999.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro sports a 5.99-inch widescreen IPS LCD display and offers a resolution of 1080×2160 at 403 pixels per inch (ppi). Comparatively, the Asus Zenfone 5 (2018) comes with a 6.2-inch screen and has a resolution of 1080 x 2246 pixels at an aspect ratio of 18.5:9. The bezel-less phone has a screen-to-body ratio of 83.6 percent and a pixel density of 403ppi. The Mi A1 offers the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio on its 5.5-inch full HD LCD display and offers 403ppi. All three phones come with Gorilla Glass protection.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro’s engine is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 octa-core 1.8GHz processor, which is exactly what the Asus Zenfone 5 (2018) has under the hood as well. Both phones come with an Adreno 509 graphics processing unit. The Mi A1 is powered by a Qualcomm processor as well: the Snapdragon 625 octa-core 2.0GHz chip.
All three phones offer 4GB RAM paired with 64GB of onboard storage, with the option to add expandable memory. While the Redmi Note 5 Pro allows up to 256GB, the Zenfone 5 allows you to add up to 400GB. The Mi A1 supports up to 128GB of expandable storage. As for battery life, the Redmi Note 5 is powered by a 4000mAh battery, whereas the Zenfone 5 is equipped with a 3300mAh cell. The Mi A1 comes with a 3080mAh power unit, in comparison.
While the Redmi Note 5 Pro currently runs on Android Nougat, we can expect an Oreo update soon enough. The Asus Zenfone 5 (2018) will come with Android 8.0 (Oreo) whereas the Mi A1, being an Android One phone, already offers Oreo.

All three phones offer dual camera arrays on the back. While the Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a 12MP+5MP combination, the Asus Zenfone 5 (2018) offers a 12MP+8MP configuration for its rear camera. In comparison, the Mi A1 is equipped with 12MP twins for its rear dual camera. In terms of video recording, all three phones can record 4K videos at 30 frames per second.
On the front, the Redmi Note 5 is equipped with a 20MP snapper. The Asus Zenfone 5 (2018) offers an 8MP secondary camera whereas the Mi A1 offers a 5MP selfie camera.

Of the three, we would choose the Asus Zenfone 5 (2018) over the Redmi Note 5 Pro, even though it was a really close call. This is because the Zenfone 5 edges ahead in terms of its display and its rear camera. But, to be fair, the Redmi Note 5 Pro offers a bigger battery and also a very good front camera. At this point, it comes down to personal preferences. But for now, our vote goes to the new Asus Zenfone 5 (2018).
