The Redmi 5A was available via flash sales at and Flipkart (and of course, Xiaomi’s Mi Home Stores) and has comfortably hit its target within a few months of its launch date. Xiaomi took to Twitter to officially announce that the inaugural discount for the ‘Desh Ka Smartphone’ was over and the base variant would no longer carry the discount. Read on to know more.

Redmi 5A: Price in India

The Redmi 5A was launched in December 2017 in India and was called the ‘Desh Ka Smartphone’ by Xiaomi since it had great features at its budget price. The lower-specs variant of the Redmi 5A was priced at Rs.4,999 while the higher-specs variant carries a price tag of Rs.6,999. And now that the discount is off, the Redmi 5A’s 2GB 16GB variant will now be priced at Rs.5,999. Which still makes it quite attractive because of the phone’s specifications and features.

Redmi 5A: Specifications, Features

The Redmi 5A has a 5-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 720×1280 pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:9. The display offers a pixel density of 296 pixels per inch (ppi) and does not come with any form of Gorilla Glass or other screen protection glass. Under the hood of the Redmi 5A is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset with a quad-core 1.4GHz processor and an Adreno 308 graphics processing unit. The processor is what makes the Redmi 5A so enjoyable as it makes the UI smooth — you barely notice any lag unless you play a heavy game. And the best part is that it is energy efficient too as the 3000mAh cell comfortably gives you a day and a half of usage at medium intensity levels.

In terms of memory specs, the Redmi 5A gives you either 2GB RAM 16GB or 3GB RAM 32GB ROM configurations. If that doesn’t seem enough, worry not because the Redmi 5A carries a dedicated memory slot that lets you add an additional 256GB of expandable memory. As for software, the Redmi 5A runs on MIUI 9.0 which is Xiaomi’s custom fork of the Android operating system. It is currently equivalent to Android Nougat (ver 7.1).

An interesting feature of the Redmi 5A is its Mi Remote software. Thanks to an IR sensor/blaster, the Redmi 5A can operate multiple devices that have IR sensors: your TV, AC, set-top box, projector, camera etc. And the Mi Remote carries a large variety of manufacturers so scrolling through the list will definitely get you a setting that works. And if it doesn’t you can submit a request via the app itself and the model of the appliance should be available soon enough.

As for camera offerings, the Redmi 5A comes with a 13MP f/2.2 rear camera which does a fairly decent job of taking photographs. Don’t count on it to perform under poor lighting conditions though, as it really struggles with low light. The selfie camera is decent, but again, nothing to write home about. It’s a 5MP f/2.0 shooter that gets the job done.

Redmi 5A: Next Sale Date

The next Redmi 5A sale is in 2 days — it will be available for purchase on 15th March 2018 on both and The sale will go live at 12 PM on both websites so if you have been planning to buy one, we’d recommend that you be at your terminal just before 12 PM. And don’t let the lack of an inaugural discount faze you because discount or not, the Redmi 5A is a great phone to use as your primary handset, or even as a secondary phone.
