After the release of the highly acclaimed Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro, Xiaomi has finally brought the Redmi 5 to the Indian market. The Redmi 5 is the successor to the hugely popular Redmi 4 and offers bumped up specs at a highly affordable price. You may recall the Redmi 4 being a massive success in India in the price segment of below Rs. 10,000. The Redmi 5 offers a great screen with minimum bezels, and an improved design in terms of build quality and camera. The smartphone is manufactured and assembled in India as part of the ‘Made in India’ initiative and also comes with many India specific customisations.

Xiaomi Redmi 5: Price in India

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 has been priced at Rs. 7,999 for the base variant of 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The slightly upgraded variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage will be available for Rs. 8,999. There is also a variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage which will cost Rs.10,999. Xiaomi will be releasing this device in four different colour options — Black, Gold, Rose Gold, and Light Blue.

Xiaomi Redmi 5: Sale Details, Launch Offers

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 is launching as an Amazon exclusive device, meaning Amazon.in will be the only third-party online retailer selling this device. Xiaomi will be selling the device from their own official website, as well as their Mi Home stores. It will also be available for purchase from all of their offline partners. The sale starts from 20th March, 2018.

With every purchase of a Redmi 5, Reliance Jio is offering a cash back of Rs. 2,200 along with 100GB of additional internet data. Purchasing the device from Amazon or mi.com will also provide 5% additional discount if purchased using and SBI credit cards. Xiaomi also mentioned that there will be a deal on Amazon’s Kindle readers where ebooks will be available for purchase at 90% discounts.


Xiaomi Redmi 5: Specification, Features

The Redmi 5 features a 5.7-inch IPS LCD screen with HD+ resolution (720 x x1440 pixels) with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. The front has extremely thin bezels, and the display boasts an aspect ratio of 18:9. In terms of design, the Redmi 5 has a metal panel at the back with plastic framing on its sides. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 features a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with an individual pixel size of 1.2µm, phase detection autofocus, ƒ/2.2 aperture, LED flash, HDR, and Full HD 1080p video recording. On the front, we get a 5-megapixel shooter with a fixed-focus lens that supports 1080p video recording. It even has an LED light at the front for brighter selfies.

The smartphone is powered by an octa-core ARM Cortex-A53 Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset with Adreno 506 GPU and a 4G LTE modem. There are two storage variants as mentioned earlier. One has 16GB of internal storage with 2GB of RAM while the other offers 32GB of memory with 3GB of RAM. Regarding software, the Redmi 5 is launching with Android 7.1 Nougat underneath Xiaomi’s custom MIUI 9.1 UI out of the box. Xiaomi is releasing this device with India exclusive software updates which include a dual-app feature that will allow using two version of the same app such as WhatsApp.

The phone houses a fingerprint scanner at the rear and a headphone jack at the top. Its connectivity features include GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, FM Radio, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Bluetooth 4.2 and an IR port. Its 3300mAh battery should last well over a day’s use. For charging, this device uses microUSB 2.0 which is understandable given the budget-centric nature of this smartphone. In an attempt to tackle India’s fluctuating and uncertain power supply issues, Xiaomi has further developed its charger to handle up to 380 volts.
