Sony has recently launched the Xperia R1 smartphone in India, and it competes directly with the Xiaomi Mi A1 and the Motorola Moto G5S. Let us have a brief look how the Xperia R1 holds against the other two devices.
Mi A1 vs Moto G5S vs Sony Xperia R1: Price in India
The Xiaomi Mi A1 was launched in India on 5th September 2017 with a price tag of Rs. 14,999. A few months after the launch, the price of the Mi A1 was dropped to Rs. 13,999 and it continues to be sold for the same. The Motorola Moto G5S was launched in India on 29th August 2017 with a price of Rs. 13,999. The price of the Moto G5S was slashed a couple of times, and the smartphone is currently sold for Rs. 10,999. The Sony Xperia R1 launched in India on 27th October with a price tag of Rs. 12,990 and the smartphone is currently being sold for Rs. 10,999.
Mi A1 vs Moto G5S vs Sony Xperia R1: Display
The Xiaomi Mi A1 has the largest display among the three smartphones in the comparison; a 5.5-inch IPS LCD display with Full HD resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The Motorola Moto G5S has a 5.2-inch IPS LCD display with Full HD resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The Sony Xperia R1 too has a 5.2-inch display but it comes with a relatively lower resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (HD), and it doesn’t feature Corning Gorilla Glass protection.
Mi A1 vs Moto G5S vs Sony Xperia R1: Camera
The Xiaomi Mi A1 is the only smartphone among the three to feature a dual-camera setup. The dual-camera setup of Mi A1 has two 12MP sensors, phase-detection autofocus, dual-tone dual-LED flash, and 4K video recording. The Motorola Moto G5S has a single 16MP primary camera with phase-detection autofocus and LED flash. The Sony Xperia R1 has a single 13MP sensor at the back with predictive phase-detection autofocus and LED flash. As for the selfies, the Mi A1 and the Moto G5S have a 5MP unit with fixed focus, whereas the Xperia R1 has an 8MP sensor with phase-detection autofocus.
Mi A1 vs Moto G5S vs Sony Xperia R1: Performance
The Xiaomi Mi A1 has Snapdragon 625 SoC, which packs more power than the Snapdragon 430 SoC in the other two smartphones. The SD625 SoC is mated with 4GB RAM, and the device comes with Android 8.0 Oreo. Thanks to the powerful processor and a well-optimised stock Android UI, the Mi A1 has a silky smooth performance.
The Motorola Moto G5S has Snapdragon 430 SoC, and it is mated 3GB of RAM. The Snapdragon 430 SoC isn’t powerful enough to provide smooth graphics to the Full HD display of the Moto G5S. As a result, the Moto G5S isn’t very smooth to operate, and it has sluggish gaming performance.
The Sony Xperia R1 also has Snapdragon 430 SoC, but it comes with only 2GB of RAM. The device runs on Android 8.0 Oreo OS along with a custom theme from Sony. Thanks to the HD resolution, the Xperia R1 has a smoother performance and smoother gaming than the Motorola Moto G5S.
Mi A1 vs Moto G5S vs Sony Xperia R1: Battery
The Xiaomi Mi A1 houses 3080mAh battery, and it supports Quick Charge 2.0 fast charging. Although the 3080mAh battery may seem small for a smartphone that has 5.5-inch screen size, it has an excellent backup. The Mi A1 lasts 28 to 32 hours along with 6 to 7 hours of screen-on time. The Motorola Moto G5S packs a 3000mAh battery, and although it may seem adequate, it drains very fast as its processor sucks a lot of juice (as it always runs at high frequencies due to the lack of processing power). The Sony Xperia R1 has the smallest battery of the lot; a 2620mAh unit, but it has decent battery life. The Xperia R1 lasts one full day with moderate usage.
Mi A1 vs Moto G5S vs Sony Xperia R1: Verdict
The processor of the Moto G5S is not powerful enough to run the Full HD display, due to which the performance and the battery life take a hit. Hence, we wouldn’t recommend buying the Moto G5S. The Sony Xperia R1 has a smoother performance than the Moto G5S, good battery backup and adequate imaging performance, but it is a no match for the Xiaomi Mi A1. The Xiaomi Mi A1 beats the other two devices in performance, imaging, battery backup, and build quality. According to us, you should go for the Mi A1 among the three devices without any doubt.
