Chinese companies Oppo and Vivo recently announced the launch of their new smartphones, the Oppo R15 and the Vivo X21 in their home market of China. Both these smartphones come with an iPhone X like notch at the top of their respective displays and also happen to be the flagship offerings from these respective companies. In this article, we will compare the Oppo R15 and the Vivo X21 to another newly announced handset from Taiwanese electronics giant ASUS – the Zenfone 5 Lite. Let us see how these handsets fare when compared spec to spec. Note that all three handsets are yet to be officially launched in India and for the same reason, we are in the dark as far as the projected official prices of these handsets

Oppo R15 vs Vivo X21 vs Asus Zenfone 5 Lite: Design, Display

The Oppo R15 gets an aluminium body and features a large 6.28-inch AMOLED display adorning its front fascia. The display has a resolution of 1080 x 2220 pixels and is in the tall 18:9 aspect ratio. The most interesting feature of the display is the iPhone X-like notch at the top centre of the screen. The display also gets Gorilla a Glass 5 layer for scratch resistance and has a PPI density of 401.

The Vivo X21 also gets an aluminium body and is visually quite similar to the Oppo R15. The display happens to be an AMOLED panel that measures 6.26-inches across in the 18:9 aspect ratio with a resolution of 1080 x 2220 pixels. Like the Oppo R15, the handset also gets an iPhone X like notch at the top of the screen. There is no confirmation if the handset gets some sort of scratch resistance layer. The handset boasts of a PPI density score of 401.


The ASUS Zenfone 5 Lite was officially announced at MWC 2018 along with its more powerful siblings the Zenfone 5 (2018) and the Zenfone 5z. The Zenfone 5 Lite features an aluminium frame mated to glass panels both at the front and the rear. The display measures 6-inches across and is an IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels in the 18:9 aspect ratio. The screen boasts of a PPI density score of 402 PPI.

The Oppo R15 is powered by the MediaTek Helio P60 SoC that houses an octa core processor and the Mali T-72 MP3 GPU for graphics. The handset comes with 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM. The dual SIM handset gets a 3450 mAh battery as well. The imaging department is handled by a dual camera setup at the rear consisting of a 16-megapixel, f/1.7 primary shooter and a 5-megapixel f/2.2 secondary camera with support for phase detection autofocus and LED flash. The secondary camera us a 20-megapixel secondary front camera with an aperture of f/2.0. The rear camera can capture 4K videos at 30fps while the front camera is restricted to 1080p videos.

The Vivo X21 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC that gets an octa core CPU and the Adreno 512 GPU for graphics. The phone will be offered with 6GB of RAM and two storage capacities – 64GB and 128GB. It will be powered by a 3200 mAh battery. As for the camera, the X2` also features a dual camera setup at the rear consisting of a 12-megapixel, f/1.8 lens and a 5-megapixel f/2.4 lens with support for phase detection autofocus and LED flash. The front camera is a 12-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture.

The ASUS Zenfone 5 Lite comes in two versions. The first version uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset and has the Adreno 508 GPU while the second version gets the Snapdragon 430 SoC and has the Adreno 505 GPU for graphics. The handsets will be offered in 3GB RAM +32GB and 4GB RAM + 64GB versions in India. The camera department is handled by a primary 16-megapixel camera and a secondary camera of unknown resolution with support for phase detection autofocus and LED flash. The front camera features a 20-megapixel camera and a secondary camera with support for LED flash.

As mentioned at the start of this article, all the three handsets in this comparison are yet to be launched in India. The prices of these handsets are also yet to be officially announced. Just looking at the specifications, though, the Vivo X21 with the Snapdragon 660 SoC seems to be your best bet. However, we will only reserve a judgment once the final prices of these devices are out.
