Folks over at XDA Developers Forum have been busy at researching the possibility of an in-display fingerprint scanner in the upcoming Xiaomi smartphone. The members of XDA Developers have got their hands on a couple of under-development firmware files of Xiaomi smartphones. The firmwares indicate towards an in-display fingerprint scanner sourced from Synaptics and Goodix.
Xiaomi Mi 7, Mi 7 Plus: Internal Codenames
The firmware file that the people at XDA Developers got their hands on has the codename ‘dipper’. Earlier than that, they’ve also got their hands on another firmware named ‘dipperold’. According to XDA Developers, ‘dipper’ maybe the codename for the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 7 which is currently under development, and the ‘dipperold’ may be the codename for an earlier Mi 7 prototype that could’ve been scrapped mid-development.
A few traces of the in-display fingerprint scanner was found in the ‘dipperold’, and not in the ‘dipper’ firmware. So, that means the Mi 7 might not have the in-display fingerprint scanner, right? People at XDA Developers thought so too, but then they got their hands on another firmware code-named ‘ursa’. The ‘ursa’ firmware has the same traces of the in-display fingerprint scanner that the ‘dipperold’ has.
Xiaomi Mi 7 Plus: In-Screen Fingerprint Reader
According to XDA Developers, the ‘ursa’ might be the codename for the Mi 7 Plus. So, the Mi 7 might not have the in-display fingerprint scanner, but the Mi 7 Plus (can be any other Xiaomi smartphone) might feature it. The firmware files also indicate towards a notch the top of the display. So it is possible that the Mi 7 Plus might feature a notch along with an in-display fingerprint scanner.
In case you didn’t already know, various rumours suggested that Xiaomi is going to launch the Mi 7 at the MWC 2018 event, but the Mi 7 was never launched. Instead, the company launched the Mi MIX 2s, and that too not at the event. Now, considering the report from XDA Developer, it is possible that Xiaomi has cancelled the Mi 7 due to the delay in the development of the in-display fingerprint sensor. Currently, Vivo X20 Plus UD, Vivo X21 UD, and the Huawei Porsche Design Mate RS feature an in-display fingerprint scanner.
Xiaomi Mi 7/Mi 7 Plus: Expected specifications and features
Based on the reports from XDA Developers, the Xiaomi Mi 7/Mi 7 Plus might feature a bezel-less display with a notch at the top. According to us, the device might feature a 5.7-inch AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution. The Xiaomi Mi 7/Mi 7 Plus will most probably be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC mated with 8GB of RAM.
There are also high possibilities that the Xiaomi Mi 7/Mi 7 Plus featuring dual-camera setup, just like its predecessor.
