2018 might have just started but the year has already witnessed the announcement and subsequent launch of multiple Android smartphones. Almost all major smartphone brands have announced their 2018 lineup already – many of them at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. However, two smartphones that we are going to talk about in this article were both announced fairly recently. These new handsets are the Huawei P20 from – well- Huawei, and the Mi Mix 2s from Xiaomi. The third handset in this comparison is the Nokia 8 Sirocco from HMD Global that was announced by Nokia back in February at MWC 2018. Let us now check out how these handsets fare when compared against each other.
Nokia 8 Sirocco vs Mi Mix 2s vs Huawei P20 Pro: Design, Display
The Nokia 8 Sirocco boasts of an aluminium frame and has a glass-clad back panel. The display and the rear panel both get a Gorilla Glass 5 layer for scratch resistance and added durability. As for the display, the Nokia 8 Sirocco uses a P-OLED panel that measures 5.5-inches across with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. This is one of the rare flagship class smartphones from 2018 to feature an old-school 16:9 aspect ratio display. The display ends up with a PPI density score of 534.
Moving on to the Mi Mix 2s, this is the successor to the Mi Mix 2 from 2017 which itself succeeded the ‘original’ Mi Mix that only saw a limited release in China. One of the first smartphones to feature an edge to edge infinity display, the Mi Mix series carries over the same design language to its third generation. The phone features an aluminium body and gets a large 5.99-inch IPS LCD panel that has a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels in the 18:9 aspect ratio. This results in a PPI density score of 403.
The Huawei P20 Pro gets an aluminium body and uses a 6.1-inch AMOLED panel in the unconventional 18.7:9 aspect ratio. The Huawei P20 is the latest smartphone to jump on to the notch bandwagon and has an iPhone X like notch at the top of its display. The resolution of the display, thanks to the notch, is an unconventional 1080 x 2244 pixels. This translates to a PPI density score 408.
Nokia 8 Sirocco vs Mi Mix 2s vs Huawei P20 Pro: Design, Hardware
The Nokia 8 even though a smartphone from 2018 features an SoC from 2017. It is powered by last year’s flagship chip – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 which has been replaced by the Snapdragon 845 this year. The graphics department is handled by the Adreno 540 GPU. The handset will come with 6GB of RAM and 128G of storage with the option to add a microSD card for additional storage. The camera department is handled by a dual camera setup at the rear consisting of a 12-megapixel + 12-megapixel setup. At the front, the phone gets a 5-megapixel f/2.0 camera. The phone will be powered by a 3260 mAh battery.
The Mi Mix 2S will use the current flagship SoC from Qualcomm for mobile devices – the Snapdragon 845 chipset. For graphics, the handset will use the Adreno 630 GPU. The phone will come in three versions – a base 6GB RAM + 64GB version, a mid-range 6GB RAM +128GB version and a top-of-the-line 8GB RAM + 128GB version. The imaging department on the Mi Mix 2s is handled by twin 12-megapixel cameras at the rear and a 5-megapixel shooter at the front. The phone gets a 3400 mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 3-0 and Qi wireless charging.
The Huawei P20 Pro uses Huawei’s own Hisilicon Kirin 970 SoC that houses the Mali-G72 MP12 GPU and an octa core CPU. The phone gets 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage space. Like the Mi Mix 2s, the P20 Pro does not get a microSD card slot. The P20 Pro gets a triple camera setup at the rear consisting of a 40-megapixel primary camera with OIS, a secondary 20-megapixel camera as well as an 8-megapixel shooter. The primary camera gets Leica optics as well. At the front, there is a 24-megapixel f/2.0 camera.
Nokia 8 Sirocco vs Mi Mix 2s vs Huawei P20 Pro: OS Update, Software
All the three handsets in this comparison were announced in 2018 and come with Android 8 Oreo – the newest stable version of Android. Being flagship class handsets, these handsets should at least on paper receive priority updates in the future. The Huawei P20 Pro being the newest of the lot actually runs Android 8.1 Oreo, a slightly newer version of Android.
Nokia 8 Sirocco vs Mi Mix 2s vs Huawei P20 Pro: Price in India, Conclusion
All three handsets in this comparison are yet to be launched in India. In fact, we still do not know the official prices of some of these handsets where they are scheduled to be released soon. The international price of the Nokia 8 Sirocco is around 750 Euros while the Huawei P20 Pro could be sold for as high as 900 Euros. This translates to around Rs.60,000 and Rs.72,000 respectively.
