Though the budget segment is an exciting one, Indian smartphone buyers are quite fond of mid-range phones as well. After all, you get better camera performance, superior processors, better design and other features when you shell out more money. Today we are going to compare three competitors that fall in the same pricing segment — the Vivo V9, the Moto X4, and the ASUS Zenfone (2018). These smartphones are among the newest mid-range devices available and have their own strengths and weaknesses. Vivo V9 vs Moto X4 vs ASUS Zenfone 5 (2018): Price in India
The Vivo V9 was unveiled to the world roughly 2 weeks ago (March 2018) and does not have any variants. It is currently priced at Rs. 22,990. The Moto X4 is the newest model in Motorola’s X series and launched sometime in November last year. There are three variants of the Moto X4 available — 3GB 32GB, 4GB 64GB and 6GB 64GB — and the 4GB RAM 64GB ROM model carries a price tag of Rs. 22,999. The ASUS Zenfone 5 (2018) smartphone is due for a release sometime this month (April 2018) and is expected to be priced around the Rs. 15,000 mark. But we’re yet to get any kind of confirmation from the company on exact pricing.
Vivo V9 vs Moto X4 vs ASUS Zenfone 5 (2018): Display
The Vivo V9 has a 6.3-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels at a density of 400 pixels per inch (ppi). The phone has an aspect ratio of 19:9 with a notch at the top, similar to the iPhone X. The Moto X4, in comparison, has a 5.2-inch LTPS IPS LCD screen that offers a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels at an aspect ratio of 16:9. It has a pixel density of 424ppi. The ASUS Zenfone 5 (2018) has a notched 6.2-inch IPS LCD display as well, with a resolution of 1080 x 2246 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18.7:9 and a density of 402ppi. While the Moto X4 and ASUS Zenfone 5 (2018) offer Gorilla Glass, the V9 does not.
Vivo V9 vs Moto X4 vs ASUS Zenfone 5 (2018): Performance
The Vivo V9 is equipped with a 2.2GHz octa-core Qualcomm MSM8953-Pro Snapdragon 626 chipset, whereas the Moto X4 features the Qualcomm SDM630 Snapdragon 630 system on chip (SoC), with eight cores clocking 2.2GHz. The ASUS Zenfone 5 (2018) has a Qualcomm chip under the hood as well, the octa-core Snapdragon 636 chip.
The Vivo V9 comes with a 4GB RAM 64GB onboard storage configuration, which is exactly the same as what the Moto X4 and ASUS Zenfone 5 (2018) offer. In terms of software, the V9 runs on Android 8.1 (Oreo) via its FunTouch operating system, which is currently at version 4.0. The Motorola offers more of a stock experience of Android Oreo. It’s a similar case for the ASUS Zenfone 5 (2018) as well, which runs Android 8.0 on its ZenUI 5.0 fork.
Vivo V9 vs Moto X4 vs ASUS Zenfone 5 (2018): Camera
The Vivo V9, the Moto X4 and ASUS Zenfone 5 (2018) all offer dual camera setups on the rear. While the V9 comes with a 16MP+5MP combo, the Moto X4 utilises a 12MP lens and an 8MP lens pair to offer bokeh effects. The Zenfone has a 12MP+8MP combination as well, but the camera features gyro electronic image stabilisation (EIS), which the other two devices don’t offer on their rear cameras. All three phones can record 4K (2160p) video at 30 frames per second.
On the front, the Vivo V9 is equipped with a monstrous 24MP selfie snapper. Comparatively, the Moto X4 has a 16MP secondary camera and the Zenfone 5 (2018) has an 8MP front shooter that also features gyro EIS.

It’s a really close call between these 3 devices, but we decided to go with the ASUS Zenfone 5 (2018). While the Vivo V9 and Moto X4 have their own USPs, we think the new Zenfone will outdo the other two. So the ASUS Zenfone 5 (2018) it is against these two!
