Xiaomi has sent out invites to a media event on April 25 in China. While the invite does not include any clue, it is being speculated that Xiaomi might introduce the Mi 6X in China at the event. The smartphone will also be making its debut in India and a few other markets as the Mi A2, succeeding the Mi A1 from last year. Going by recent leaks, the Mi A2 will introduce some significant upgrades such as an 18:9 display, a more powerful processor, and an improved dual-camera setup at the back.

Mi A2 (Mi 6X): Launch Date

Last year, Xiaomi had officially announced the Mi 5X in China at an event held on July 26. The Mi A1, however, was made official in India several weeks later on September 5. This year, however, we expect the Mi A2 to make its debut in the Indian market soon after the Mi 6X is unveiled in China. References to the Mi A2 were recently found in the source code of the Xiaomi India website by Twitter user @IshanAgarwal24, hinting at the possibility of the smartphone making its way to the Indian market very soon. If Xiaomi does officially announce the Mi 6X on April 25, we can expect the Mi A2 to be made official in India sometime next month.

Mi A2 (Mi 6X): Expected Price in India

Xiaomi had debuted the Mi A1 in India last year with a price tag of Rs.14,999. There is a good chance that the base variant of the Mi A2 with 4GB RAM and 32GB of onboard storage could be launched with the same price tag at launch. If Xiaomi decides to bring the 6GB RAM variant of the smartphone to our shores, it could be priced at or around Rs.17,999.

Mi A2 (Mi 6X): Rumored Specs, Features

The Chinese variant of the Mi A2, which will be launched as the Mi 6X, was recently spotted on the TENAA website, revealing a few key specs. According to the Mi 6X listing on the certification agency’s website, the smartphone will feature a 5.99-inch display with 1080 x 2160 Full HD+ resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. In China, the smartphone will be available in three memory configurations: 4GB RAM + 32GB storage, 6GB RAM + 64GB storage, and 6GB RAM + 128GB storage. The listing also confirmed a 2910mAh capacity battery and the handset’s physical dimensions – 158.88 x 75.54 x 7.3mm. In terms of design, the Mi 6X / Mi A2 is expected to be similar to the Redmi Note 5 Pro, featuring vertically-stacked dual cameras and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

More information regarding the smartphone’s specifications has now surfaced courtesy of a new report from the folks over at XDA developers. According to their exclusive analysis of the Mi 6X firmware files, the Mi 6X / Mi A2 is going to run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 octa-core chipset clocked at 2.0 GHz, 200MHz lower than its standard 2.2 GHz clock speed. Even with a slightly lower clock speed, the Snapdragon 660 is a significant improvement over the Snapdragon 625 chipset powering the Mi A1, both in terms of CPU as well as graphics performance. On the back of the handset will be a dual-camera setup consisting of a 12MP Sony IMX486 primary sensor coupled with an f/1.8 aperture and a secondary 20MP Sony IMX376 sensor paired with the same f/1.8 aperture. In comparison, the Redmi Note 5 Pro uses the same 12MP primary sensor paired with an f/2.2 aperture and a 5MP Samsung sensor paired with an f/2.0 aperture. While the Redmi Note 5 Pro doesn’t support 4K video recording, the Mi A2 will be capable of 4K video capture at 30fps. However, the report claims the Mi A2 will not have optical zoom.

Apart from the above details, the report also confirms a few other specs such as the presence of a microSD card slot for further expansion, an IR blaster, and Android 8.1 Oreo operating system. Since the Mi 6X will not be an Android One device, it will be running on Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9 out of the box. The Mi A2, on the other hand, is expected to run stock Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.
