The Mi A1 has been a fairly successful handset as far as Xiaomi is concerned. While it might not have been as popular as its brother – the Redmi Note 4 – the Mi A1 was the only way you could enjoy the pure Android experience on a Mi smartphone in India. That’s right! The Mi A1 did not come with MIUI installed. Thanks to it being a part of the Android One Project, the handset ran a stock version of Android. The Mi A1 was launched in India back in September 2017. Less than eight months later, it seems the handset is all set to welcome its successor – the very obviously named – Xiaomi Mi A2. In this article, we will do a spec- by spec comparison of the new Xiaomi Mi A2 with two devices. The first device is the Mi A1 – the A2’s older brother, while the second contender is the Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo. Among these three handsets, only the Mi A1 has been on sale in India. However, even the Mi A1 is currently out of stock. As for the Mi A2, Xiaomi is yet to make this device official. At the outset, let us start off by discussing the pricing of these three handsets in India. The Mi A1, as you folks might be already aware was sold in two versions; a base 3GB RAM +32GB version priced at Rs.8,999 and a pricier 4GB RAM + 64GB version that was priced at Rs.10,999. Being the successor to the Mi A1, it is possible that the Mi A2 could also be sold with a similar price tag. As for the Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo, this handset has been priced at Rs.16,990. The Xiaomi Mi A2 is likely to get an LTPS IPS LCD display that measures 5.99-inches across. This panel is likely to come with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, thereby ending up with a PPI density score of 403. As you might have guessed, the display is in the tall 18:9 aspect ratio. The Mi A2 is also likely to get Gorilla glass 3 for scratch resistance and durability. The handset will also get an aluminium body.

As for the Mi A1, this handset also came with an aluminium frame and rear panel. The display happens to be an IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels – in the good old 16:9 aspect ratio. The display also gets a layer o Gorilla Glass 3 for added durability. The phone also ends up with a PPI density score of 403.

As for the Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo, this phone gets a Super AMOLED display that measures 5.5-inches diagonally. The display resolution is 720 x 1280 pixels. The panel, as you might have guessed by now, is in the standard 16:9 aspect ratio as well. Due to the lower display resolution, the Galaxy J7 Duo ends up with a low PPI density score of 267.

The Xiaomi Mi A2 is likely to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 SoC. This chipset houses an octa core processor clocked at 2.2 GHz and uses the Adreno 506 GPU for graphics.While not confirmed yet, the Mi A2 is likely to be offered in a 4GB RAM + 64GB version and a 6GB RAM + 128GB variant. The handset also gets a microSD cards slot for additional memory. The camera department uses a 20-megapixel + 8-megapixel dual camera setup at the rear and a 20-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video calls.

The Mi A1, on the other hand, is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC. Ths chip houses an octa core processor clocked at 2.0 GHz. The phone is offered in a 3GB RAM + 32GB version and a 4GB RAM + 64GB version with both the versions getting a microSD card slot. As for the camera, the Mi A1 gets a 12-megapixel + 12-megapixel setup at the rear and a basic 5-megapixel shooter at the front.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo gets the Exynos 7885 SoC that houses an octa core processor. The phone is offered in a single 4GB RAM + 32GB version. The camera at the rear is a dual 13-megapixel + 5-megapixel unit with LED flash while the front camera is an 8-megapixel unit.

The Mi A2 being the successor of the Mi A1 is not really a competitor as far as Xiaomi is concerned. However, in terms of pure specs, the Mi A2 is the clear winner of this comparison. The Galaxy J7 Duo, on the other hand is overpriced for what it offers and simply does not make the cut.
