In the past few months, India has seen a virtual assault of phones in the sub Rs.15,000 price range. In the next few months, there will be several new additions to this price bracket as well. Simply put, the Indian consumer will have a hard time choosing a good smartphone if he has a budget of Rs, 10,000 and above. One of the most significant launches in this price segment was made last week by ASUS who launched the Zenfone Max Pro (M1) as a direct competitor to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and the Redmi Note 5 Pro. However, the Zenfone Max Pro (M1) was not the only handset to debut in this price segment recently. Two other Chinese smartphone makers also launched their respective budget Android devices recently in India. These devices include the Gionee S11 Lite and the Oppo A83 (2018). In this article, we will do a spec by spec comparison of the Zenfone Max Pro (M1) against the Gionee S11 Lite and the Oppo A83 (2018) to see who comes out tops.
Asus Zenfone Max Pro (M1) vs Gionee S11 Lite vs Oppo A83 (2018): Design, display
The ASUS Zenfone Max Pro (M1) features an aluminium body and uses toughened glass at the front. The display on this device measures 5.99-inches across and is in the 18:9 aspect ratio with a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. This also happens to be an IPS LCD panel. The Zenfone ends up with a PPI density of 402.
The Gionee S11 Lite gets a large 5.7-inch display which happens to be an IPS LCD panel. The phone, however, sports a much lower resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels- also in the 18:9 aspect ratio. This translates to a PPI density score of 282.
As for the Oppo A83 (2018), this handset also gets an aluminium body and uses a 5.7-inch IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels. Like the other two handsets in this comparison, the Oppo A83 ?(2018) also get an 18:9 aspect ratio display and ends up with a PPI density score of 282.
As clearly observed, the Zenfone Max Pro (M1) easily wins this round thanks to its superior, sharper display.

The ASUS Zenfone Max Pro (M1) gets to use the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC that houses an octa core Kryo CPU clocked at 1.8GHz and the Adreno 509 GPU for graphics. The phone comes in three versions – a 3GB RAM + 32GB base version, a 4GB RAM + 64GB mid range version and a top of the line 6GB RAM + 64GB version scheduled for launch later this year. The Zenfone Max Pro (M1) gets a 13-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup at the rear. The 6GB RAM version gets an upgraded 16-megapixel primary camera instead of a 13-megapixel unit. The front camera happens to be an 8-megapixel unit for selfies and video calling.
The Gionee S11 Lite is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC which by itself is a good budget SoC. It is, however, clearly, positioned a rung below the powerful SD636 SoC that is found in the Zenfone. The SD 430 gets an octa core CPU and uses the Adreno 505 GPU for graphics. The phone is offered in a 4GB RAM + 32GB version. The camera on the Gionee S11 Lite is a dual 13-megapixel + 2-megapixel camera at the rear and a 16-megapixel selfie camera at the front.
The Oppo A83 (2018) uses the Mediatek MT6737T SoC for number crunching and houses an octa core processor clocked at 2.5 GHz. The graphics department is handled by the Mali-G71 MP2 GPU. The phone gets 3GB of RAM and 32Gb of onboard storage. The camera is a single 13-megapixel shooter at the rear and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video calls.

Only the ASUS Zenfone Max Pro (M1) offers Android 8 Oreo, the newest current version of Android among these three handsets. The Zenfone also boasts of a stock Android experience which the other two smartphones do not have. While the S11 Lite runs Gionee’s Amigo UI atop Android 7.1 Nougat, the Oppo A83 (2018) runs ColorOS -also atop an Android 7.1 core.

Looking at the pricing, the ASUS Zenfone Max Pro (M1) clearly offers far better value for your money and is an overall much better package. If I had the money, it would be an easy choice for me to get the Zenfone Max Pro (M1).
