The sub Rs.10,000 price segment has seen a lot of action in the past few months. There is no denying the fact that Xiaomi is making a killing in this segment thanks to its vast array of offerings ranging from the base version of the Redmi Note 5 (which goes for Rs.9,999) to the Redmi 5 and the lower priced Redmi 5A which starts at Rs.5,999. In the next few months, several other manufacturers are slated to bring their own products to this price segment in a bid to make life difficult for Xiaomi.

In this article, we will talk about two such handsets. Specifically, we will compare those two handsets to Xiaomi’s current entry-level offering  – the Redmi 5. The two handsets that we are talking about is the soon-to-be-launched Moto G6 Play from, well, Motorola and the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) that was announced just recently in India by Samsung. Let us check out how these new competitors fare against Xiaomi’s offering.

Moto G6 Play vs Redmi 5 vs Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018): Design, display

The Moto G6 Play features a large 5.7-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels. The display is in the newer 18:9 aspect ratio and ends up with a PPI density figure of 282 – which is not bad for a handset that should ideally sell for under Rs. 10,000 when launched.

The Redmi 5 also features an IPS LCD touchscreen that measures 5.7-inches across and is in the 18:9 aspect ratio. Like the G6 Play, this display also has a resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels. While we are not yet sure about the material with which the Moto G6 Play is made, we know for sure that that Redmi 5 features a plastic frame and aluminium clad back panel. The Redmi 5 also ends up with a PPI density score of 282.

The Galaxy J2 (2018) was launched just a few days ago. It features a 5-inch  qHD display with a resolution of 520 x 960 pixels. This is a Super AMOLED panel in the 16:9 aspect ratio. The handset also gets a layer of Gorilla Glass for scratch resistance and durability. The lower resolution of the panel means that the J2 (2018) has the lower PPI density figure among the three at 220 PPI.

The Moto G6 Play finds itself being powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chipset that houses a 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 processor. The handset also uses the Adreno 505 GPU for graphics. The handset will come in two options – a base 2GB RAM + 16GB version and a 3GB RAM + 32GB version. The camera department consists of a primary 13-megapixel shooter and a secondary 8-megapixel camera.

The Redmi 5 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC that gets a slightly faster octa core processor clocked at 1.8 GHz. The graphics is handled by the Adreno 506 GPU. The Moto G6 Play is the only handset in this comparison to come with Android 8 Oreo pre installed at launch. The other two handsets in this comparison are still based on an Android 7 Nougat core. The Redmi 5, however, uses the MIUI interface which is feature packed. The Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) on the other hand uses Samsung’s own custom UI. The Moto G6 Play sticks to a near stock version of Android.

Moto G6 Play vs Redmi 5 vs Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018): Price in India
