Ever since the launch of the Xiaomi Mi 6X in China, we have been anxiously awaiting its arrival in India, especially because we learned that the device could be launched as the Mi A2. If this does happen, it would be succeeding one of our most favourite mid-range smartphones of 2017, the Mi A1. In today’s comparison, we are pitting this smartphone against the Vivo V9 and Oppo F7 to see if the upcoming handset offers any compelling reason to choose it over the latter two with their uniquely controversial notched displays and high-resolution front-facing cameras.

Mi A2 (Mi 6X) vs Oppo F7 vs Vivo V9: Design, Display

Both the Oppo F7 and Vivo V9 are two of the newest smartphones in the budget segment of the market to sport the Apple iPhone X-like notch on the top of their displays. The Vivo V9 has an aluminium construction at the back with a toughened layer of glass at the front. The screen is an IPS LCD panel measuring 6.3-inches with a resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels and a 19:9 aspect ratio. The Oppo F7’s design is identical to the former, with the only difference being that it sports a scratch-resistant glass back. Both these devices house micro-USB ports for charging and feature 3.5mm headphone ports.

The Mi A2 (Mi 6X) comprises of a metal unibody design very similar to that of the Redmi Note 5 Pro. It sports a similar minimal bezel display on all four sides and also has a vertically stacked dual-camera and fingerprint scanner on the back. It has a 5.99-inch LTPS IPS LCD screen with Full HD+ resolution and Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Charging sees an improvement as the Mi A2 (Mi 6X) boasts a USB Type-C port but ends up getting rid of the 3.5mm headphone port.

The Oppo F7 seems to have more of a premium feel to it with its glass back, but the upgrade to USB Type-C charging port of the Mi A2 (Mi 6X) is a design choice that is more practical in daily use even if it comes at the cost of the headphone port. The notch on the Oppo F7 and Vivo V9 might be a problem to some but doesn’t cause too much obstruction because of the marginally larger screen size. With that said, it doesn’t add anything to the experience either, and so it will come down to your personal preference.

Mi A2 (Mi 6X) vs Oppo F7 vs Vivo V9: Camera

In the imaging department, the Vivo V9 boasts a 16MP+5MP a dual camera setup at the back, while the front notch houses a 24MP selfie snapper with a soft LED flash. The Oppo F7 only has a single 16MP camera at the back while a 25MP sensor is provided for selfies. On the other hand, the Mi A2 (Mi 6X) offers a 12MP (Sony IMX486) + 20MP (Sony IMX376) dual rear-facing cameras. The front 20MP (Sony IMX376) even provides 2x optical zoom.

The Mi A2 (Mi 6X) undoubtedly offers the better camera setup when compared to the other two smartphones in this comparison.

The Vivo V9 comes powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 SoC with Adreno 506 GPU for graphics. The phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo-based Funtouch OS 4.0. Oppo F7 settles for a MediaTek Helio P60 SoC with Mali G72 MP3 GPU and runs Android 8.1 Oreo with ColorOS on top. The Xiaomi Mi A2 (Mi 6X) has been equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor and will run Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. Since this is expected to launch as an Android One device in India, the UI will be a lot closer to stock Android and will receive updates and security patches a lot sooner than other devices.

The better processor backed by a software version with quicker support from Google helps the Mi A2 (Mi 6X) take the clear win in this section of our comparison.

The Mi 6X comes with a 3010mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 3.0 technology. The Vivo V9 boasts a 3,260mAh battery while the Oppo F7 comes loaded with a 3400mAh battery. Bases on pure numbers it might look like the Oppo F7 has the upper hand. But knowing how the Snapdragon 660 has been optimised for better battery consumption, the Mi A2 (Mi 6X)’s battery is easily going to provide a full day’s worth of use, and Quick Charge 3.0means you can top it up that much faster.

Mi A2 (Mi 6X) vs Oppo F7 vs Vivo V9: Verdict
