There’s no doubt that Xiaomi completely changed the budget smartphone market with its Redmi series of smartphones. But that was 2017… and Xiaomi’s competitors have realized that they have no choice but to match the features and specs offered by the Chinese giant. And as expected, we saw a slew of devices launched in 2018 that directly take on phones like the Redmi Note 5 and Note 5 Pro. Today, we’re going to compare the Redmi Note 5 with two of its closest competitors — the Coolpad Note 6 and the Honor 9 Lite.

Coolpad Note 6 vs Redmi Note 5 vs Honor 9 Lite: Price in India

The Coolpad Note 6 was launched earlier this week by Coolpad as an India exclusive and will only be sold offline. The device will be available in two variants, 32GB and 64GB, priced at Rs. 8,999 and Rs. 9,999 respectively. The Redmi Note 5 made its debut in February this year and comes in two configurations, a 3GB 32GB version and a 4GB 64GB model. While the former is currently priced at Rs. 9,999, the latter carries a price tag of Rs. 11,999. Comparatively, the Honor 9 Lite, which went on sale for the first time in January, carries a price tag of Rs. 10,999. There is a variant of the Honor 9 Lite with higher specs, namely 4GB RAM and 64GB onboard storage, which retails for Rs. 14,999.

The Coolpad Note 6 comes with a 5.5-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. It has a pixel density of 401 pixels per inch (ppi) and an aspect ratio of 16:9. Comparatively, the Redmi Note 5 has a 5.99-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels at an aspect ratio of 18:9 and a pixel density of 403ppi. The Honor 9 Lite sports a 5.65-inch display which, like the Redmi Note 5, has a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. It has a pixel density of 428ppi, which is better than the pixel density on the Redmi Note 5.

The Coolpad Note 6 is equipped with an octa-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8940 Snapdragon 435 chipset. The Redmi Note 5 comes with an octa-core processor as well, on the 2.0GHz Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625 chipset. In comparison, the Honor 9 Lite ships with an octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 659 chipset, with four cores clocking 2.3GHz and four cores clocking 1.7GHz.

While the Coolpad Note 6 and Redmi Note 5 offer users Android Nougat (version 7.1), the Honor 9 Lite runs EMUI 8.0, which offers users Android Oreo (8.0).

Since we’re comparing models that come close in terms of price, here are the hardware specs: the Coolpad Note 6 offers 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory. The Redmi Note 5, in comparison, offers 3GB RAM and 32GB onboard memory. The base model of the Honor 9 Lite comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage.

The Coolpad Note 6 is equipped with a 13MP shooter on the rear, whereas the Redmi Note 5 comes with a 12MP primary camera. And beating them both, the Honor 9 Lite features a 13MP+2MP dual camera system on the rear. However, the Redmi Note 5 is the only one among the three that can record 4K video at 30 frames per second.

On the front, the Coolpad Note 6 features an 8MP+5MP combo lens that let you play with bokeh effects and shoot portrait mode selfies. The Redmi Note 5 offers a tamer 5MP selfie snapper in comparison. The Honor 9 Lite wins the camera round yet again with a dual camera setup on the front — it features a 13MP+2MP config for your vanity shots.

The Honor 9 Lite wins the shootout among these three for the following reasons: it has excellent camera offerings, a solid processor, better software and superior design. While the Redmi Note 5 came close, the Coolpad Note 6 didn’t put up much of a fight with its modest display and processor specs. So the Honor 9 Lite it is!
