It was just a few days ago that Chinese smartphones and technology giant Huawei officially launched two new handsets in India from their renewed P-Series lineup. The most talked about handset was obviously the Huawei P20 Pro that features flagship class hardware, a triple camera setup at the rear, and not to mention, a flagship-class price tag as well. However, the company also did launch a much more affordable P20 at the launch. This version of the phone is called the Huawei P20 Lite and looking at the pricing and the feature-set of the handset; this is a clear budget segment handset with a dash of premium-ness added to it. In this article let us take a closer look at the P20 Lite. We do not have a review unit of either of these devices and it would be a while before we get our hands on both of them. Anyway, let us first take a closer look at the pricing of the handset currently in India
Huawei P20 Lite: Price in India, Variants
The Huawei P20 Lite is currently sold in a single version in India that comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage capacity. There is a 128GB version that is exclusively sold in China. We hope the company brings that version to India sometime in the future. In India, the Huawei P20 Lite has been priced at Rs.19,999 and can be bought exclusively from Amazon.
Let us now take a closer look at the specifications, design and other aspects of the device
Huawei P20 Lite: Design, display
The P20 Lite can easily stake claim to being one of the sleekest handsets to have been launched under the Rs.20,000 mark in India. In fact, this is perhaps the most affordable handset in India that comes with the now common ‘notch’ on the upper part of the display. The handset features a 5.84-inch LTPS IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels. The panel has an aspect ratio of 19:9 and ends up with a PPI density score of 432.
Huawei P20 Lite: Specifications, hardware
The P20 Lite finds itself powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 659 SoC. This mid-range chipset is used by almost all the current generation budget and mid-range handset from Huawei and Honor – ranging from the Honor 9 Lite and the Honor 7X to the Honor 9i. This SoC integrates an octa core processor and uses the Mali-T830 MP2 GPU for graphics. As mentioned earlier, the handset comes in a single 4GB RAM + 64GB version in India. Moving on to the imaging department, we see that the handset gets a dual camera setup at the rear as the primary camera. This consists of a 16-megapixel primary shooter and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The primary camera supports phase detection autofocus as well. As for the front camera, this is also a 16-megapixel sensor. Powering all this potent hardware is a non-removable Li-Po 3000 mAh battery. The P20 Lite also features a USB Type C port which is not usually found on handsets below the Rs.20,000 mark.
Huawei P20 Lite: OS Updates, Software
As expected, the P20 Lite tuns Huawei’s own EMUI 8.0 atop an Android 8 Oreo core. As you can see, the phone is already running the latest stable version of Android and in the future, should be updated to newer versions of Android.
Huawei P20 Lite: Overview
There is no doubt over the fact that the P20 Lite is an excellent device. It also looks a lot more premium when compared to most other smartphones in its price range. However, we find Huawei using the same Kirin 659 chipset across multiple devices now which makes the handset seem like the same old handsets in a different body. At its current price, it competes with its own sibling – the Honor 9i which has the same processor and a dual camera setup at the front as well. Sure, there are some premium additions like the USB Type C port and the notch. However, it is up to you to decide if the few thousand rupees you pay extra to get these features are worth the extra money.
