Xiaomi India today released teasers that confirm the launch of a new Redmi smartphone on the 7th of June. It is expected that the company will be launching the Redmi S2 as the Redmi Y2 at the launch event in New Delhi next month.

Xiaomi India has teased the launch of a new smartphone in India early next month. According to the teasers posted by the company on its social media pages, the upcoming device will be the “BEST” selfie smartphone. Quite clearly, this suggests the company is actually going to be the Redmi S2, which was launched in China last week. However, the teaser video released by Xiaomi has the letter “Y” highlighted in hashtag #RealYou, which makes us believe the company will be launching the Redmi S2 in India as the Redmi Y2, succeeding the Redmi Y1 from last year.

Redmi Y2: India Launch Date

Xiaomi has confirmed that the upcoming Redmi smartphone will be launched in India at an event in New Delhi on the 7th of June. With the launch event set for early June, we can expect the smartphone to go on sale in India before the end of next month.

Redmi Y2: Expected Price in India

Currently, Xiaomi sells the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variant of the Redmi 5 at Rs.8,999 and the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variant of the Redmi Note 5 for Rs.9,999. It is possible that the upcoming Redmi Y2 will be priced at Rs.9,499 or even Rs.9,999 in India. While it isn’t superior to the Redmi Note 5 in every area, it does feature superior cameras on both sides, which could somewhat justify it being priced identically to the Redmi Note 5. The official pricing, will, of course, be revealed on June 7th.

Redmi Y2: Expected Specifications, Features

The Redmi Y2 will feature a 5.99-inch 720 x 1440 HD+ resolution display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a 2.5D curved glass layer on top. Xiaomi claims the panel used in the Redmi S2 offers a peak brightness of 450 nits and a contrast ratio of 1000:1. Powering the Redmi Y2 will be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, the very same one that powers the Redmi Note 5 and a few other Xiaomi smartphones. It is an octa-core processor clocked at 2.0 GHz with an Adreno 506 GPU. In China, the Redmi S2 comes in two memory configurations – 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. It remains to be seen if Xiaomi will bring both configurations to the Indian market. For further expansion up to 256GB, the smartphone includes a dedicated microSD card slot.

In the camera department, the upcoming Redmi Y2 will be more impressive than even the Redmi Note 5. At the rear will be a 12MP + 5MP dual-camera setup, allowing the Redmi Y2 to take pictures with a nice bokeh effect. On the front of the smartphone will be a 16-megapixel selfie camera with a Soft LED flash to help take selfies even in low-light. The front-facing camera also supports AI Beauty, just like the Redmi Note 5 Pro. Another feature that it will share in common with the Redmi Note 5 Pro is Face Unlock. If you don’t like facial recognition too much, you can, of course, use the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor to unlock the device.

Moving on to connectivity, the Redmi Y2 will support Wi-Fi 802/11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, micro USB 2.0, an IR blaster and 4G VoLTE. Keeping the lights on will be a 3080mAh capacity non-removable battery, identical to its predecessor. As for physical size, the Redmi Y2 measures 160.73 x 77.26 x 8.1mm and weighs in at 170 grams. In terms of software, the Redmi S2 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9.5 out of the box. However, it is being speculated that the Redmi Y2 could be launched as an Android One device in India and other global markets, which means it might ship with stock Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box.
