An upcoming Android smartphone from Samsung with model number SM-G8850 is believed to be the Samsung Galaxy A8 Star. The phone had received a certification from TENAA last month in China as well as FCC certification. The phone is expected to be exclusive to one of the cellular mobile carriers in China, and there’s a high possibility that it won’t be released in other markets. Now, the device appears to have passed through Wi-Fi Alliance’s certification process ahead of its launch. We’ve also spotted one more variant of the Galaxy A8 Star, and it bears the model number SM-G8858.

Samsung Galaxy A8 Star: Wi-Fi Alliance Certification
As per the information available in Wi-Fi Alliance certification documents of the Samsung SM-G8850 and the SM-G8858, both phones run Android 8.0 Oreo and feature dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac as well as Wi-Fi Direct. Both smartphones received the Wi-Fi certifications yesterday, and they appear to be ready for the launch. Other than this information, nothing significant could be found in the certification documents.
Samsung Galaxy A8 Star: Expected Features, Specifications
The phone is expected to be designed for the Chinese market and the design and specifications of the Galaxy A8 Star were revealed by TENAA a few weeks ago. The Galaxy A8 Star features a glass-and-metal sandwich design, just like many other Galaxy A and Galaxy S series devices from the South Korean smartphone giant. However, there are some differences on how the phone looks from the rear. As opposed to other Galaxy A, Galaxy Note, and Galaxy S series smartphones, the Galaxy A8 Star has an iPhone X-like vertical dual-camera placement near the top left corner of the phone. There’s an LED flash below the protruding camera module. There’s a rounded square-shaped fingerprint reader beside the dual-camera setup. The phone also appears to feature the infamous Bixby button.

The Galaxy A8 Star (if that’s what Samsung ends up naming the phone) features a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED screen, but without any curves on the sides. It will be equipped with an octa-core processor with a clock speed of 2.8GHz. We expect Samsung to use a mid-range chipset in the phone, possibly an Exynos 7885. The Galaxy A Star also features 4GB/6GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, an 8-megapixel front-facing camera, 16MP+24MP dual-camera setup at its rear, and a 3700mAh, non-removable battery. The phone could be released in 4GB and 6GB RAM variants, and it’s quite possible that both variants will feature a microSD card slot and a hybrid dual-SIM card slot. The Galaxy A8 Star is expected to be released as an upgrade to the Galaxy A8+ which was launched earlier this year.
