With the recent launch of the Zenfone Max Pro (M1) ASUS has made its presence stronger in the highly competitive Rs.10000 to Rs.15,000 price segment in India. As outlined in our review, the Zenfone Max Pro has been designed to compete against both the Redmi Note 5 and the pricier Redmi Note 5 Pro. Within a short period of time, the Zenfone Max Pro has become one of the most sought-after handsets in the sub-15,000 price bracket in India. In today’s comparison, we take a closer look at how the Zenfone Max Pro stacks up specs wise compared to its arch-rival the Redmi Note 5 Pro and the soon-to-be-launched Xiaomi Mi A2 – which is also referred to as the Mi 6X.

Let us start off the proceedings by talking about the pricing of these three handsets.
The ASUS Zenfone Max is currently available in two versions – a base 3GB RAM + 32GB version priced at Rs.10,999 and a pricier 4GB RAM + 64GB version that costs Rs.12,999. The handset would also come in a 6GB RAM + 64GB version soon. This version will also boast of an updated camera. This top-of-the-line version will set you back by Rs.14,999.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro is offered in two versions – an entry-level 4GB + 64GB version that costs Rs. 14,999 and a more expensive 6GB RAM + 64GB version that will set users back by Rs.16,999.
As for the Mi A2, this one is yet to be officially announced for India. The phone was officially launched in China a few weeks ago with the base version of the handset priced at around 17,000 INR. However, this could be different from the price that it could be launched in India.
ASUS Zenfone Max Pro (M1) vs Redmi Note 5 Pro vs Mi A2 (Mi 6X): Design, Display
The Zenfone Max Pro (M1) from ASUS boasts of an aluminium body and features a large 5.99-inch IPS LCD display at the front. The panel has a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels in the 18:9 aspect ratio and ends up with a PPI density score of 402.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro also features an aluminium body and toughened glass at the front. The display is a 5.99 inch IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. Like the Zenfone, this panel is also in the 18:9 aspect ratio and ends up with the same pPI density score as the ASUS.
The Mi A2 also gets an aluminium body and a toughened glass panel at the front. The display is identical to that of the other two handsets and is an IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels in the 18:9 aspect ratio.

The ASUS Zenfone Max Pro (M1) is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC and houses the Adreno 509 GPU for graphics. The handset will be sold in three versions – a base 3GB RAM + 32GB version, a 4GB RAM + 64GB version and a 6GB RAM + 64GB version. The 6GB version will also feature an upgraded 16-megapixel primary camera. The other two models get a 13-megapixel primary camera and a secondary 5-megapixel depth-sensing camera. The front camera setup is an 8-megapixel unit.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro also uses the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC with the same GPU combination. The handset is sold in two versions – a base 4GB RAM + 64GB version and a higher priced 6GB RAM + 64GB version. As for the camera, the handset features a dual camera setup consisting of a 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel at the rear and a 20-megapixel front-facing camera.
The Mi A2 uses the more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC that houses the Adreno 512 GPU for graphics. The phone will come in three versions; a 4GB RAM + 64GB version, a 6GB RAM + 64GB version, and a 6GB RAM + 128GB version. Unlike the other two handsets, this one will not feature a microSD card slot. As for the camera, the handset will use a 12-megapixel + 20-megapixel camera at the rear and a 20-megapixel front-facing camera.

Of the three handsets, the Zenfone Max Pro and the Mi A2 will run a stock version of Android. The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, will run MIUI 9 atop an Android 7.1.2 Nougat core. The Mi 6X is identical to the Mi A2 except that it will run MIUI instead of stock Android.

Among the three handsets, the Mi A2 is the winner when it comes to pure specifications. It is, however, expected to be priced higher than the other two handsets in the list. The ASUS Zenfone Max Pro offers you the best bang for your bucks and is a well-rounded package and matches the Redmi Note 5 Pro in all almost respects except the camera department. It is also cheaper than the Redmi Note Pro and for the same reason, wins this one pretty easily. Note that if a great camera is a priority, you might as well go for the Redmi Note 5 Pro.
