The Smartphone world is still drooling over the OnePlus 6 which was launched globally yesterday and has just been launched a few hours ago in India. And We’ve already got something to drool over next. The alleged pics of the Xiaomi Mi 8’s front panel and retail box have been leaked and there is a lot for us to be excited about!

Xiaomi Mi 8 leaks: What we know so far

If you’re confused about the numbering, well so are we. Xiaomi had last launched its flagship Xiaomi Mi6 and was expected to be launching the Mi7 this year. Earlier leaks and rumors had suggested that the Mi 7 will be a powerhouse when it comes to specs. Rocking a Snapdragon 845, Xiaomi’s 2018 flagship was touted to be launching at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, which was held earlier this year in Barcelona. However, that didn’t happen and instead, Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s, an upgrade to last year’s Mi Mix 2.

Coming back to the Mi 7, The Snapdragon 845 was reported to be coupled with at least 6GB of RAM, with some reports also pointing to the possibility of an 8GB RAM variant in the works too. Apart from this, the leaks had also given us some more information about the hardware of the phone. This would include a 16 MP + 16 MP  dual camera set up, a tall 5.6-inch Full HD+ display and 128 GB of internal storage. Last, but not the least, the Mi 7 is reported to be running on a massive 4,480 mAh battery which is a huge upgrade over the Mi 6’s 3,350 mAh unit.

Xiaomi Mi 8: Eighth Anniversary Phone?

In a fresh leak today, we’ve got an image which shows off the alleged retail box of a Xiaomi phone with the moniker ‘8’ on it, thus adding fuel to some reports of Xiaomi skipping the Mi 7 and launching their 2018 flagship as the Xiaomi Mi 8, in an attempt to commemorate the company’s eighth anniversary this year. Some earlier reports had also suggested that Xiaomi might be working on two devices for this year, the Mi 7 and Mi 7 Plus, and now it seems the Mi 7 plus might be the eight-anniversary special edition phone. A tipster from China has also claimed that the 8th Anniversary Edition phone from the company will be launching as the Xiaomi Mi 8. He has also added further details that the phone will have a superior facial recognition system much like the iPhone X’s Face ID.

Previous reports that had surfaced, claimed that Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship will have an advanced 3D facial recognition solution. If that is indeed true, the Xiaomi Mi 8 may debut as the first Android phone with support for 3D facial scanning. Today we’ve got our hands on a picture which is allegedly the front panel of the Mi 7 / Mi 8 which further supports this claim as we see a big iPhone X-esque notch at the top filled with what seems to be more than just a usual face recognition setup, as found on the other Android phones till now. A 3D facial scanning setup will definitely put Xiaomi way ahead of its counterparts.

Xiaomi Mi 8: Expected Launch Date and Pricing

Xiaomi has reportedly confirmed that it will host its 2018 Annual Product launch event in Shenzhen in China. As per a new report in Gizmochina, Chinese tipsters have claimed that Xiaomi has planned a product launch event at the end of this month, May 31st

Unfortunately, these leaks do not provide us with any additional details except for a first look at the Mi8’s alleged retail package and the front panel. There’s no word about the phone’s pricing or availability as of now.

These reports about Xiaomi launching the Mi 8 are still fresh and we’ll have to wait and see what Xiaomi actually comes up with. Will it launch the Mi 8 instead of the Mi 7 or will it follow suit with Apple that launched iPhone X along with the iPhone 8 to celebrate its 10th anniversary, and launch the Mi 7 and a Mi 8? We’ll find out in a couple of weeks. Stay tuned for the latest reports and let us know of your opinion below.
