One thing that has been made clear by the recent market trends is that Xiaomi is the king of the budget phones. Be it under 10k segment or the 20k segment, Xiaomi has made its mark quite clear. However, this does not mean that it is unrivalled in the segment, manufacturers like Huawei and Oppo are trying to penetrate the market with their affordable sub-brands such as Honor and Realme. In today’s comparison, we are comparing Xiaomi’s Redmi S2 (Redmi Y2), Redmi Note 5 with Oppo’s recently launched Realme 1.

The Redmi S2 has been launched in China, and is yet to be launched in India. Some of the reports state that Xiaomi might make it official in India on June 7, but there is no confirmation by the company. In China, the Redmi S2 is priced at CNY 999, which converts to Rs.10,500. We can expect the Redmi S2 to launch under the 10k segment.

As for the Redmi Note 5, the 3GB + 32GB storage version of the phone is priced at Rs.9,999 and the high-end 4GB RAM + 64GB storage version is priced at Rs. 11,999. It is now available via an open sale on both Mi.com and Flipkart.

Oppo’s Realme 1 price in India starts at Rs. 8,990 for the standard 4GB RAM + 64GB storage model. The 6GB RAM + 128GB storage version’s price in India is Rs. 13,990. It’s worth noting that even though the phone has been launched in India, it is yet to go on its first sale. The first sale of the Realme 1 is slated for May 25 on Amazon India. Both the variants of the phone will be up for sale alongside some launch offers like cashback on SBI cards and benefits for Jio customers.

The Redmi S2 comes with a 5.99-inch IPS LCD screen with 720×1440 pixels resolution and an aspect ratio of 18:9. The Redmi Note 5, on the contrary, features a 5.99-inch display with a higher 1080×2160 pixels resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. The Realme 1 bears a 6-inch full-HD+ display with 1080×2160 pixels and 18:9 aspect ratio.

Well, the Redmi S2 loses in this segment with its lower resolution. Both the Realme 1 and the Redmi Note 5 fair equally in terms of display.

Both the Redmi S2 and the Redmi Note 5 come powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset paired with Adreno 506 GPU. The Redmi S2 features 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB storage options and the Redmi Note 5 also bears the same RAM and storage options. The Redmi S2 sports 12MP+5MP dual camera setup at the rear, and a 16MP front facing camera for selfies while the Redmi Note 5, on the other hand, settles for a single lens 12MP rear camera and a 5MP selfie snapper. For software, the Redmi S2 runs Android Oreo-based MIUI 9.5 while the Redmi Note 5 runs Android Nougat-based MIUI 9 OS.

The Realme 1 is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P60 chipset with 3GB/4GB/6GB RAM and 32GB/64GB/128GB storage options. The phone boasts a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera. The camera on the phone is geared with Oppo’s AI Beauty 2.0 and  features as well and it also offers Face Unlock feature. The Realme 1 runs Android 8.1 Oreo-based ColorOS 5.0.

In this segment, the Redmi S2 takes the cake with its powerful chipset and camera setup.

All the three phones fall into the budget category, however, the Redmi S2 seems to be the winner, thanks to its powerful camera and hardware. If you are in a hurry and are looking for a smartphone with powerful chipset and decent camera specs then you can go for the Redmi Note 5.
