OnePlus 6 Android P Beta Now Available for Download: Installation Steps and Other Details

During the OnePlus 6 announcement in London, and India, the company promised that the device will get the latest Android P Beta OS in the next few days. It has done well on the promise and delivered.

The OnePlus 6 Android P Beta is now available for download from the OnePlus Forums. It is highly unlikely that any of you have received or purchased the OnePlus 6 yet, but when you do, you can get your hands on the latest software that Google currently has to offer.

OnePlus stated that the OnePlus 6 would be one of the first devices to get Android P, and that is true. As of now, only the latest Pixel 2 and the original Pixel smartphones are eligible to try out Android P. Of course, Google has also opened up the beta for other OEM’s, but OnePlus appears to be first to give its users a glimpse at the new software.

Android P Beta OS: What’s New?

There’s plenty new with the latest Android P OS from Google. You get an all-new way to navigate through the phone, which is heavily based on gestures. It is similar to the gestures found on the iPhone X, but it isn’t the same thing. Google has also added more colors and rounded features to the UI elements.

There’s a new feature called Android Dashboard that shows you how much you use your device, and how. The battery has been improved thanks to another new feature called Adaptive Battery. And there are plenty of other minor improvements to the UI, small features, built-in screenshot editor, new UI for Volume control, better Do Not Disturb mode, etc. Oh, and Android P now supports the ‘notch’.

OnePlus 6 Android P Beta: Download

As mentioned above, the official OnePlus 6 Android P Beta software is now available for download. You will have to head over to the OnePlus Forum to download the firmware file, which weighs about 1.3GB. You can download it from the source link at the end of the post.

Make sure you only install it on the OnePlus 6, and because this is a beta software, you will find some bugs. For example, the current build has bugs where VoLTE doesn’t work, there are Bluetooth compatibility issues, slow-motion in Camera is not stable, there’s no Face Unlock, no support for Widevine L1, and the Wi-Fi SoftAP device manager doesn’t work.

If you’re okay with these bugs, and still want to try out the Android P beta on your OnePlus 6, then follow the instructions below.

OnePlus 6 Android P Beta: How to Install

After you have downloaded the Android P Beta for the OnePlus 6, copy the file to your device. Remember, this process will clean your phone, so it is better to backup the device before starting off.

  • Copy the downloaded file to the internal storage of your device.
  • Open Settings app and head to System Updates. At the top right corner, tap on the three buttons and select Local Upgrade.
  • Click on the installation file that is shown there. Choose immediately upgrade and then system upgrade to 100 percent.
  • Now turn off your device.
  • Press Power button and Volume down at the same time to enter the recovery mode.
  • In recovery mode, tap on Wipe data/factory reset and confirm the action.
  • Tap on Reboot and boom!

You should now have completed the update process. Wait for your OnePlus 6 to boot into Android P. Also, we and OnePlus both recommend that you have more than 30 percent charge on your phone before you do this. If you’re already on a Developer Preview software, then you won’t have to wipe the device after updating.
