MediaTek today announced the latest addition to its Helio of family of mobile processors, the Helio P22. The chipmaker says its latest Helio P series has been designed for the “new premium” breed of mid-range smartphones that offer high-end features at relatively affordable prices. Earlier this year, the company had introduced the Helio P60 chipset for more expensive mid-range devices.
“Our latest generation of Helio chips, such as the P60, have generated significant interest and exceeded our expectations. The continued customer demand we’re witnessing validates our focus on the growing mid-market segment and its clear consumers have an appetite for innovative devices that offer outstanding features at an affordable price point,” said TL Lee, General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communication business unit. “With support for high quality dual camera photography, AI enhancements and incredible power efficiency, the Helio P22 sets a new bar for accessibility to premium features. We expect continued device maker wins and consumer growth in this segment with MediaTek’s new Helio P22 chipset.”
MediaTek Helio P22: Key Highlights
The MediaTek Helio P22 is the first mid-range SoC to be manufactured on TSMC’s 12nm FinFET manufacturing process, delivering improved power efficiency compared to previous generation mid-range chips from MediaTek. MediaTek’s new Helio P22 brings support for all the latest features such as Light AI-enhancements including Face Unlock, dual-camera support, Helio X30 grade twin ISP, and improved connectivity features. Thanks to a hardware depth engine for real-time Bokeh preview, the Helio P22 is said to be capable of minimizing grain, noise, aliasing, chromatic aberration, and more. The mid-range mobile chipset also supports up to 20:9 aspect ratio HD+ (1600 x 720) resolution displays.
MediaTek has said that the Helio P22 is in volume production now and the company expects the first smartphones powered by the chip to be available by the end of second quarter.
