Samsung recently announced a new budget offering in its J-series lineup dubbed the Galaxy J8. In terms of its internal specifications, it comes with all the necessary intricacies you would expect a mid-tier 2018 smartphone to have. The phone is about to go on sale this June and we thought it would be appropriate to compare it with other similarly priced smartphones to see if it is worth the wait. First up is Samsung’s own Galaxy A6 which not only falls in the same price range but also has very similar specs. Let’s see how both these devices compare against the Huawei P20 Lite which is known for being a bang-for-the-buck alternative.

When it came to the performance of these devices, the results were relatively more straightforward. The Galaxy A6 comes with the weakest CPU, which is the octa-core Exynos 7870 clocked at 1.6GHz. Then comes the Galaxy J8 with slightly better octa-core Snapdragon 450 clocked at 1.8GHz. The Huawei P20 Pro prevails with its octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 659 with 4 cores clocked at 2.36GHz and the other 4 clocked at 1.7 GHz.

Samsung Galaxy A6 vs Samsung Galaxy J8 vs Huawei P20 Lite: Battery, OS Updates

Since all three devices in this comparison are 2018 smartphone, they come with Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box. Samsung has its own take on the custom UI, while the Huawei handset comes with a bit heavier EMUI 8.0 skin on top. When it comes to the battery, the Galaxy A6 and the P20 Lite both come with 3000mAh batteries, while the J8 has a 3500mAh cell. Samsung gave the Galaxy J8 a slight bump in its battery over the Galaxy A6 but still kept both phones with micro-USB for charging. The slightly lower capacity battery of the P20 Lite can be easily overlooked thanks to its use of USB Type-C and support for fast charging.

Samsung Galaxy A6 vs Samsung Galaxy J8 vs Huawei P20 Lite: Verdict

Choosing the winner was not as difficult as it may have seemed at first. While the Samsung Galaxy J8 was clearly just an upgraded reiteration of the Galaxy A6, the Huawei P20 pro proved that it had a better overall package. It had the best resolution display even though it wasn’t OLED, its processor clearly surpassed, and even though the rear camera wasn’t exceptional, the selfie shooter was easily of a higher calibre. It was also the only phone in this comparison to come with a USB Type-C charging port with support for fast charging.

It is no doubt that the Huawei P20 won this comparison, but if we had to pick one between the two Samsung devices, we would have to go with the Galaxy J8 since the A6 offers inferior specs at a higher price point.
