Last month, Xiaomi introduced its very first S series Redmi smartphone in China, aimed at all the selfie lovers out there. A few days after the official unveiling in China, Xiaomi India teased the launch of a new Redmi smartphone in India using the hashtag #RealYou, highlighting that it will be a new Y series device. The upcoming Redmi smartphone has now been teased on Amazon.in as well, confirming that it will be launching in India as an Amazon exclusive. Even though Xiaomi hasn’t officially confirmed, it is more or less certain that the device being teased by Xiaomi India and Amazon.in is, in fact, the Redmi S2. In India, the smartphone will be launched as the Redmi Y2, succeeding the selfie-focused Redmi Y1 from last year.
Redmi Y2 (Redmi S2): India Launch as Amazon Exclusive
The Redmi Y2 teaser page on Amazon.in makes it quite clear that the smartphone will be an Amazon exclusive in India. However, the Redmi Y2 will also be available for purchase on Mi.com and the Mi Store app. The teaser page also lists some of the key features of the upcoming smartphone. These include a dual-camera setup on the back, an LED selfie light, Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. More details, including pricing and availability, will be revealed on the 7th of June.
Redmi Y2 (Redmi S2): Expected Price in India
Since the Redmi Y2 is expected to succeed the Redmi Y2 in the Indian market, we expect it to be launched at Rs.8,999 for the 3GB RAM variant with 32GB of onboard storage. Xiaomi will likely offer a 4GB RAM variant as well with 64GB of internal storage, likely priced at Rs.10,999. The smartphone is expected to come in Rose Gold, Platinum Silver, and Champagne Gold colors.
Redmi Y2 (Redmi S2): Specifications, Features
While it hasn’t been officially confirmed, Xiaomi is expected to launch the Redmi S2 as the Redmi Y2 in India. The Redmi S2 was announced in China last month, so the specifications and features of the smartphone aren’t a mystery. Similar to its predecessor, the Redmi Y2 will be a device specifically targeted at selfie enthusiasts. The Redmi Y2 is expected to sport a 16-megapixel resolution selfie camera on the front with a soft LED flash and AI Beauty feature. Xiaomi has also used pixel binning technology that helps increase the effective pixel size of 2.0um. Apart from selfies, the 16MP front-facing camera supports the Face Unlock feature as well.
Now let’s go over some of the other key specifications of the smartphone. The Redmi Y2 features a 5.99-inch IPS LCD display with 720 x 1440 HD+ resolution and peak brightness of 450 nits. Powering the Redmi Y2 will be Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 octa-core chipset, the same chip that powers the Redmi Note 5 and a few other Xiaomi smartphones currently on sale in India. In the memory department, Redmi Y2 is expected to be offered in two configurations at launch in the country – 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. The smartphone will come with a Hybrid Dual-SIM slot configuration, so expanding the storage further might be a tough choice for some of you.
At the rear is a dual-camera setup with a 12MP primary sensor and a 5MP secondary sensor. The primary 12MP sensor features phase-detection autofocus, 1.25um pixel size, and an f/2.2 aperture. Similar to the Redmi Note 5 Pro, the Redmi Y2 will be capable of shooting videos at up to 1080p Full HD resolution. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, an IR blaster and 4G VoLTE. Keeping the lights on will be a 3080mAh capacity non-removable battery. In terms of software, the Redmi Y2 will be launched with the Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9 out of the box.
