The mid-range segment has been crowded lately with big brands like Samsung, Nokia and Motorola trying to wrestle back some market share from the segment leader Xiaomi. Today, we take a look at some of the upcoming smartphones in the mid-range segment. If you’re planning to buy a phone around the 15,000 range, these are the options you could consider:

Moto G6: Specifications, Expected Price in India

The Moto G6 is the successor to last year’s Moto G5 from Motorola and has been confirmed to be launching on June 4 as an Amazon exclusive. The much-anticipated device will come with a 5.7-inch IPS LCD screen with a 1080 x 2160 Full HD+ resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. The phone is going to be powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 450 chipset clocked at 1.8 GHz with an Adreno 506 GPU. It sports a 12MP + 5MP dual-camera setup at the back, an 8-megapixel snapper on the front, and both sides have LED flashes for better low light photography. The 3000mAh battery can be charged via the included USB Type-C port and it’ll also support fast charging. On the software side, the device will be launching with some version of Android Oreo for sure. The phone will be launched somewhere around the Rs.15,000 mark.

Redmi Y2: Specifications, Expected Price in India

The Redmi S2 has been launched in China, and is yet to be launched in India. Some of the reports state that Xiaomi might make it official in India on June 7, but there is no confirmation by the company. The Redmi S2 comes with a 5.99-inch IPS LCD screen with 720×1440 pixels resolution and an aspect ratio of 18:9. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset paired with Adreno 506 GPU. It features 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB storage options.  For software, the Redmi S2 runs Android Oreo-based MIUI 9.5. The Redmi S2 sports 12MP+5MP dual camera setup at the rear, and a 16MP front-facing camera for selfies.


In China, the Redmi S2 is priced at CNY 999, which converts to Rs.10,500. We can expect the Redmi S2 to launch under the 10k segment.

Nokia X6: Specifications, Expected Price in India

The Nokia X6 is the first Nokia smartphone with the controversial notch at the top of its display, which itself is a 5.8-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD screen with 2,280×1,080 pixels resolution. Under the hood, it’s running a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 octa-core SoC paired with an Adreno 509 GPU. It’ll have 4GB or 6GB of RAM coupled with 32 or 64 gigs of internal storage. The Nokia X6 is rumored to have a 3060mAh cell, and will be running Android Oreo out-of-the box.

When the Nokia X6 Launched in China a few weeks ago, it came in three different storage configurations. The first model comes with 4GB of RAM with 32GB of internal storage. This model costs CNY 1,299 which roughly equates to Rs.13,700. Then we have the 4GB RAM variant that has 64GB storage and is priced at CNY 1,499 (roughly Rs. 15,800). Finally, there is a variant that has 6GB of RAM with 64GB of internal memory capacity that has a price tag of CNY 1,699 (Rs.18,000 approx.). The India pricing should be along similar lines with prices starting from ~15,000 mark.

Mi A2: Specifications, Expected Price in India

The Mi A2 aka Mi 6X is touted to be the successor of last year’s Mi A1. It features a 5.99-inch FHD+ Full View display with 18:9 aspect ratio.  The screen on the device also comes with Corning’s Gorilla Glass protection that protects from any unwanted scratches. Design wise, the Mi A2 is surely the pick of the lot here with its premium metal construction.

Under the hood, it rocks an octa-core Snapdragon 660 SoC coupled with 4GB/6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB onboard storage. On the software side of things, the phone ships with stock Android 8.1 Oreo without MIUI customisation on top. The phone comes under Google’s Android One programme that also makes it a part of Project Treble. A 3010 mAh battery backs the phone with Quick Charge 3.0 support. At the back, the Mi A2 might feature dual 12+20-megapixel primary sensors which can even be used for low-light photography, thanks to the presence of dual LED flash. On the front, to aid selfies and video calling, the Xiaomi Mi A2 houses a 20MP front-facing camera.

The Mi A2 aka MI 6X has been launched at Yuan 1599 (roughly Rs. 16,000) for the 4GB RAM variant and Yuan 1799 (approx. Rs. 19,000) for the 6GB RAM variant, and its Indian pricing should be very close to these numbers.

Moto G6 Play: Specifications, Expected Price in India

The Moto G6 Play is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 427 chipset which is coupled with 2GB of RAM clocked at 1.4 GHz with an Adreno 505 GPU. It sports a 5.7-inch HD+ IPS display and runs Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. Fueled by a massive 4000mAh battery, the Moto G6 Play is good enough to last even the heaviest days of usage with ease.

On the imaging front, the smartphone boasts a 13-megapixel primary rear camera with phase detection autofocus, and a f/2.0 aperture lens. The 13-megapixel camera on the back is accompanied by an LED flash. On the front, there is an 8-megapixel selfie shooter.

Globally, the smartphone is available in two memory configurations – 2GB RAM + 16GB internal memory and 3GB RAM + 32GB internal memory. There’s also an option to expand this using a microSD card. The Moto G6 Play is confirmed to Launch on India on June 4th as a Flipkart exclusive and will be selling for Rs. 13,999 for its base variant.
