Today Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Y2 in India at an event in Delhi. The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 is the successor to the Redmi Y1 that launched in India last year. The Redmi Y2 is also known as Redmi S2 internationally. The device focuses mainly on camera performance for which it has a high-resolution front-facing camera, dual-camera setup at the back and AI capabilities. The smartphone is available in two variants; one with 32GB of storage and 3GB of RAM, and another with 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM.

Xiaomi Redmi Y2: Price in India and Sale Date

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 is priced at Rs. 9,999 for the 32GB storage variant, and Rs. 12,999 for the 64GB storage variant. The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 will be sold through Amazon India and Mi Online Store India, and the first flash sale date is set for 12th June 2018.

Xiaomi Redmi Y2: Features

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 features a 5.99-inch bezel-less IPS LCD with HD resolution, which is the same display as that in the Xiaomi Redmi 5. The device has a metal body, and it is available in three colour variants; Dark Grey, Gold, and Rose Gold.

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 packs the tried and tested Snapdragon 625 processor. The device runs on the latest Android 8.1 Oreo OS. The operating system is customised with the MIUI 9.5 user interface. The MIUI 9.5 has plenty of features such as app lock, dual-apps, second space, customised calendar and messaging applications for India, Mi Cloud with 5GB of free storage, and changeable themes.

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 comes with a dual-camera setup for the primary camera; it has one 12-megapixel sensor and one 5-megapixel sensor. The camera uses phase-detection autofocus and is aided by dual-tone dual-LED flash. The dual-camera setup of the Redmi Y2 allows it to capture images with bokeh effect (also known as portrait mode). The Redmi Y2 doesn’t support 4K video recording, which the similarly priced Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 does.

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 also comes with a 16-megapixel selfie camera aided by an LED flash. The camera is capable of capturing HDR images. The camera also has AI for beautifying the images. According to Xiaomi, its AI for the camera is tuned for India; it can recognise the nose rings, and bindi while beautifying the images, which the smartphones from other brand are still lacking.

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 is backed by a 3080mAh battery, which is relatively smaller for its display size and processor. On top of that, the device only has 10W charging. In comparison, the similarly priced Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 comes with a 4000mAh battery and 18W fast charging.

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 is a dual-SIM device that supports 4G LTE with VoLTE. The device has Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.2, Infrared port, GPS, 3.5mm audio jack and a microUSB port for connectivity. The Redmi Y2 comes with a dedicated microSD card slot with which the users can expand the storage of the device up to 256GB. The dedicated microSD card slot also means that users can use two SIM cards and a microSD card at the same time.

Keeping up with the competition, the device also features face unlock for easy unlocking of the device. Apart from the face unlock, the device of course has a fingerprint scanner at the rear for those who don’t trust the reliability and security of the face unlock.

Xiaomi Redmi Y2 vs Competition

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 faces competition with the company’s own Redmi 5 and the Redmi Note 5. The device also competes directly with the Motorola Moto G6, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, and the Honor 9 Lite.
