Vivo NEX S or Vivo NEX Ultimate: What should the latest Flagship phone be called?

While Vivo is using the NEX Ultimate moniker in China for its latest flagship smartphone, we think the manufacturer will go with the NEX S moniker in markets outside China.

Chinese smartphone maker Vivo launched its latest all-screen flagship smartphone at an event held in Beijing yesterday. While rumors had been suggesting the company would be launching three different variants of the smartphone, the company actually launched two main variants. While the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845-powered variant has been dubbed the NEX Ultimate (NEX S), the Snapdragon 710 variant is simply dubbed NEX. Thanks to the two different names used to refer to the variants of the smartphone, we aren’t too sure if the company’s latest flagship should be called the NEX S or the NEX Ultimate.

Vivo NEX S or NEX Ultimate: Confusion Persists

At the launch event yesterday, Vivo did not use the NEX S or NEX A monikers to refer to the two variants of the smartphone. While it referred to the Snapdragon 710-powered variant simply as the Vivo NEX, the Snapdragon 845-powered variant was referred to as the NEX Ultimate. Well, Vivo actually used a Chinese word as the suffix for the Snapdragon 845-powered variant, so “Ultimate” is just the English translation of that word. Adding to the confusion is the URL of the Vivo NEX “Ultimate” page on the Vivo China website, which contains the “NEX S” moniker instead of NEX Ultimate.

While we are just speculating here, we think it is highly likely that the Snapdragon 845-powered variant of the smartphone will be called the NEX S when it makes its global debut and not the NEX “UItimate”. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 710-powered variant of the smartphone, on the other hand, could launch in markets outside China as the NEX, without any suffix.

Vivo NEX Ultimate (NEX S): Specifications

The Vivo NEX Ultimate (NEX S) features a huge 6.59-inch AMOLED Ultra FullView display with 1080 x 2316 Full HD+ resolution and a 19.3:9 aspect ratio. With the exception of the bottom chin, the bezels on the other three sides of the display are nearly non-existent, allowing for a screen-to-body ratio of 91.2% without a notch. Similar to the company’s X21 smartphone, the NEX Ultimate (NEX S) features an in-display fingerprint sensor. Powering the NEX Ultimate (NEX S) is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 10nm octa-core processor with an Adreno 630 GPU. In terms of memory, the flagship Vivo smartphone packs a whopping 8GB of RAM and is available in 128GB and 256GB storage variants.

In the camera department, Vivo NEX Ultimate (NEX S) isn’t quite as impressive as some of the other Android flagship smartphones on the market currently. Vivo has gone with a 12MP + 5MP dual-camera configuration at the rear. While the primary 12MP Sony IMX363 sensor has been coupled with an f/1.8 aperture and features 4-axis optical image stabilization, the secondary 5MP sensor is paired with an f/2.4 aperture. The selfie camera pops up from the top of the handset and happens to be an 8MP unit with an f/2.0 aperture lens AI-powered Face Beauty feature.

Connectivity-wise, the Vivo NEX Ultimate (NEX S) supports Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac dual-band, Bluetooth 5.0 Low Energy, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, 4G VoLTE, and a USB Type-C port with USB OTG support. Fueling the flagship smartphone is a non-removable 4000mAh capacity battery with 22.5W fast charging support. Some of the other key features of the NEX Ultimate (NEX S) include 7.1-channel 3D audio with CS43199 + SSM6322 audio chip, Jovi AI assistant with a dedicated button, and a piezoelectric earpiece. On the software front, the smartphone runs on the Android 8.1 Oreo operating system with a new Energy UI custom UX on top.

Vivo NEX Ultimate (NEX S): Expected Price in India

In China, the NEX Ultimate (NEX S) variant with 128GB of onboard storage has been priced at 4,498 yuan (Rs.47,400 approx.), while the 256GB variant costs 4,998 yuan (Rs.52,600 approx.). In case the Vivo NEX Ultimate (NEX S) is launched in India, we expect it to be priced higher than the Rs.50,000 mark for the 256GB variant.
