
Xiaomi has started pushing a new software update for the entry-level Redmi 5A smartphone in India. The latest OS update for the smartphone brings the May Android security patch along with a few improvements and bug fixes.
Redmi 5A: Latest OS Update Brings May Android Security Patch
The latest OS update for the Xiaomi Redmi 5A is currently rolling out in India as MIUI version 9.5.10.0.NCKMIFA. According to the change-log, the update includes the Android security patch dated May 1, 2018, new translation optimization, and fixes the reboot issue while calling that some users of the smartphone had been facing. Since it is a relatively minor update, it weighs in at 191 MB in terms of size. If you haven’t received an update notification yet, there is nothing to worry about. Minor software updates are also rolled out in batches, so it might take a few days for the update to reach all Redmi 5A units. You can also check for the update manually by heading over to Settings > About Phone > System Updates > Check for Update.
Redmi 5A: Price in India, Offers
The Xiaomi Redmi 5A comes in two memory configurations – 2GB RAM + 16GB and 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM. You can get your hands on the Redmi 5A 2GB RAM variant for Rs.5,999, while the 3GB RAM variant will set you back Rs.6,999. The entry-level Android smartphone comes in four color variants – Blue, Dark Grey, Gold, and Rose Gold.
Current offers on Mi.com include 10% cashback up to Rs.100 on paying using Freecharge, 3-month Hungama Music subscription, and Mi Protect device protection at just Rs.549. The Redmi 5A is also eligible for the Reliance Jio instant Rs.2,200 cashback offer. If you perform the first recharge of Rs.198 or Rs.299 Jio prepaid plan, Jio will provide you with 44 cashback vouchers of Rs.50 each on the MyJio app. You can then redeem these vouchers when performing recharges in the future.
Redmi 5A: Specifications, Features
Marketed by Xiaomi as the “Desh ka Smartphone” Redmi 5A comes with a 5-inch 720 x 1280 HD resolution IPS panel offering a Reading mode and color temperature adjustment. Powering the handset is a quad-core Snapdragon 425 chipset clocked at 1.4 GHz with an Adreno 308 GPU. In terms of memory, the Redmi 5A is available in two configurations – 2GB RAM + 16GB storage and 3GB RAM + 32GB storage. For further expansion up to 128GB, the smartphone includes a dedicated microSD card slot.
The smartphone features a 13MP rear camera with a 5-element f/2.2 aperture lens, phase-detection autofocus, an LED flash, and Full HD video capture. On the front of the handset is a 5MP camera with f/2.0 aperture for your selfies and video calls. Connectivity-wise, the Redmi 5A supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 Low Energy, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, 4G VoLTE, and an IR blaster. In terms of battery life, the Redmi 5A is among the better entry-level smartphones on sale in India currently, thanks to a 3000mAh capacity battery and good optimization by Xiaomi.
The smartphone doesn’t include a fingerprint sensor and nor does it support the Face Unlock feature. In terms of size, the Redmi 5A measures 140.4 x 70.1 x 8.35mm and weighs in at 137 grams. On the software front, the smartphone was launched with Android 7.1.2 Nougat-based MIUI 9 out of the box in November last year. As we already mentioned above, the smartphone will not be running on the MIUI 9.5 version, although still based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat and not the latest Android 8.1 Oreo. The entry-level Android smartphone is confirmed to receive the MIUI 10 update as well, although Redmi 5A owners might need to wait until the end of the year for the update to begin rolling out.
