After launching the Redmi 6 series smartphones recently, Xiaomi is now gearing up to launch the successor to the Mi Max 2 from last year. Expected to be dubbed Mi Max 3, the upcoming phablet is expected to offer quite a few major upgrades compared to its predecessor, which still remains one of the most popular phablets in the Indian market.

Mi Max 3: Launch Date

Xiaomi is yet to confirm a launch date for the Mi Max 3. However, the company’s CEO Lei Jun has already confirmed that the phablet will be making its debut sometime in July. According to a rumor that surfaced online today, Xiaomi is holding an event in China on July 3 to unveil the Mi Max 3 and the Mi 6X Hatsune Miku Special Edition. However, some are speculating that Xiaomi will only launch the Mi 6X Hatsune Miku Special Edition at the event on July 3rd, while the Mi Max is likely to be launched at a separate event that could be held towards the end of July We expect the India launch to happen a few weeks after the phablet’s debut in China.

Mi Max 3: Leaked Specifications, Features

The upcoming Mi Max 3 phablet was recently certified by TENAA in China, so most of its key features and specifications have already been leaked online. Xiaomi’s upcoming phablet will feature a gigantic 6.9-inch sized IPS display with 1080 x 2160 Full HD+ resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. Thanks to the tall 18:9 aspect ratio, the Mi Max 3 will not be very different from its predecessor in terms of dimensions. The TENAA listing has revealed that the Mi Max 3 will measure 176.15 x 87.4 x 7.99mm and weigh in at 221 grams. Its predecessor, the Mi Max 3, measures 174.1 x 88.7 x 7.6mm and weighs in at 211 grams. So the Mi Max 3 will actually be slightly taller but also slightly narrower while being a hair thinner. In terms of design, the images published by TENAA suggest the Mi Max 3 will look somewhat similar to the Redmi 6 from the front, while from the rear it shares more in common with the Redmi Y2.

Under the hood, rumors suggest the Mi Max 3 will be running on Qualcomm’s powerful Snapdragon 710 octa-core chipset. However, the Mi Max 3 TENAA listing suggests the phablet will be powered by an octa-core chipset clocked at 1.8 GHz. The Snapdragon 710 has a clocked speed of up to 2.2 GHz, so the 1.8 GHz clock speed listed on the TENAA actually points towards the Snapdragon 636 chipset instead. Moving on to memory, the Mi Max 3 is going to be available in three memory configurations at launch in China. The base variant will have 3GB of RAM coupled with 32GB of onboard storage. Next, the middle variant is going to be equipped with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The highest-end version of the phablet will feature 6GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage. All the three variants will have a microSD card slot as well for further expansion.

When it comes to imaging, the Mi Max 3 is expected to feature a dual-camera setup on the back with the primary sensor being a 12MP unit. While the resolution of the secondary sensors hasn’t been revealed yet, we do know that the phablet will be capable of shooting videos at up to 4K resolution. On the front will be an 8MP selfie camera, although the base variant is expected to feature a 5MP selfie camera.

In terms of battery life, the Mi Max 3 is expected to offer superior battery life compared to its predecessor, although not by much. While the Mi Max 2 packs a 5300mAh capacity battery, the Mi Max 3 will come with a 5400mAh capacity. Fast charging will be supported as well. Some of the other key features of the Mi Max 3 that have already been confirmed include a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and an IR blaster. On the software front, we expect the Mi Max 3 to ship with Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9 out of the box.

Mi Max 3: Expected Price in India

The Mi Max 3 is expected to carry a slight premium compared to its predecessor when it launches in India. If Xiaomi decides to launch the 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variants in India, we can expect the phablet’s price in India to start at Rs.16,999 or even Rs.17,999. On the other hand, if Xiaomi launches the 3GB RAM variant as well, the phablet’s starting price could be under the Rs.15,000 mark.
