Face Unlock has become an essential feature on recently launched smartphones. Regardless of its credibility as the primary tool for unlocking a device, the functionality has managed to make its way on most of the phones that debuted in the past months. HMD Global seems to be aware of its popularity and is now gearing up to bring the feature on several Nokia phones with a software update.
Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 6.1 aka Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 8 Sirocco To Get Face Unlock
HMD Global will be rolling out the update for Nokia phones that run Android’s native smart-lock functionality, and not the Chinese firmware. The existing smart-lock feature on the Nokia phones works similar to the Face Unlock feature but is slower and complicated to use. The upcoming update will bring the conventional Face Unlock feature to the Nokia phones, which is expected to work better and faster than the smart-lock feature. Nokia Mobile’s official Twitter handle in reply to a Nokia customer tweeted that the company will provide a “proper” face unlock feature through a software update.
@deepalakshmii Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 plus and the new Nokia 6, as well as the Nokia 8 will get face unlock as an OTA update in the coming months

It’s worth noting that in the past we have reported about the inaccuracy of Face Unlock feature integrated on the software level. Recently, the Face Unlock feature on the OnePlus 6 was reported to be inaccurate and later OnePlus also suggested its users to not completely rely on it. Smartphones like the iPhone X come with Face ID feature integrated on the hardware-level, which is deemed to be far more accurate than the Face Unlock technology equipped on the software level.
Eligible Nokia Phones
The tweet also mentioned the eligible Nokia smartphones that will be getting the Face Unlock feature. These devices are – Nokia 8, Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 plus and Nokia 6.1 (aka Nokia 6 2018). As of now, Nokia has not specified a timeline for the update rollout, but it assured that the update would begin rolling out in the coming months. There are fair chances that Nokia may wait for the Android P final update and bundle the Face Unlock feature with that update.
