Both Vivo and Xiaomi unveiled their latest offerings to the world recently and both phones are expected to make their way to the Indian market sometime next month. Both these phones will be the first devices powered by the Snapdragon 710 SoC. While the Mi 8 SE is a smartphone that conforms to 2018’s standards, the NEX A attempts to stretch the boundaries so to speak. Can the revolutionary new tech on the NEX A justify its high price or are you better off with a more affordable offering such as the Mi 8 SE? Let’s compare the two phones side by side to answer this question.
Vivo NEX A vs Mi 8 SE: Price in India
The Vivo NEX A launched in China priced at 3,898 yuan which roughly equates to Rs. 41,000 in India. There is only one storage variant of this phone with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The Mi 8 SE also comes with 6GB of RAM with 64GB of internal storage priced at $313 (approx. Rs. 21,300). There is a base variant as well which comes in a 4GB RAM + 64GB storage configuration which costs $282 (approx. Rs.19,200).
Vivo NEX A vs Mi 8 SE: Design, Display
The main selling point of the Vivo NEX A is its glorious 91.24 percent screen-to-body ratio. There is not obtrusive notch at the top as the front camera has been moved to a mechanical unit that pops out the top of the phone when needed. Both the front and back of this phone are covered in premium glass. The display itself is a 6.59-inch AMOLED Ultra FullView screen with 1080 x 2316 Full HD+ resolution and a 19.3:9 aspect ratio. The phone comes with a fingerprint scanner situated at the back and offers a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The Mi 8 SE also features an overall glass construction but does not come with as impressive of a display in terms of its 81.3 percent screen-to-body ratio. This is a 5.88 inch AMOLED panel with a 1080 x 2244 Full HD+ resolution with an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. However, this panel offers compatibility with HDR 10 content. The fingerprint scanner is also present on the rear of this phone, but there is no 3.5mm audio jack found anywhere here.
Vivo NEX A vs Mi 8 SE: Camera
At the back, the Vivo NEX A features a 12MP primary sensor with a f/1.8 aperture with a secondary 5MP sensor with a f/2.4 aperture. This setup even features 4-axis OIS. The front pop-up shooter unit houses an 8MP shooter with a f/2.0 aperture.
The Mi 8 SE also comes with a 12MP + 5MP camera configuration at its rear but comes with f/1.9 and f/2.0 apertures respectively. This setup also employs the use of EIS instead of OIS. However, its front 20MP selfie camera trumps the one found on the NEX A.
Vivo NEX A vs Mi 8 SE: Performance, Software
Raw performance on these phones will be pretty much the same as both devices come with Snapdragon 710 chipsets onboard. Both phones will also come with Android 8.1 Oreo loaded out of the box. The main difference will be in their UI. The NEX A comes with Vivo’s custom Funtouch UI on top which is quite heavy and has an unavoidable iOS-inspired interface. The MIUI of the Mi 8 SE also has some iOS inspired elements but offers a relatively cleaner experience.
Vivo NEX A vs Mi 8 SE: Battery
Regarding battery life, however, the competition is not as close. The NEX A comes with a massive 4000mAh battery which supports 22W fast charging. The Mi 8 SE does come with Quick Charge 3.0 support but has a significantly smaller 3120mAh battery.
Vivo NEX A vs Mi 8 SE: Which is the best?
Picking an absolute winner out of these phones is difficult as they fall in two vastly different price brackets. In the end, it comes down to what exactly you are looking for in a device and how much you are willing to spend. If raw performance with top-of-the-line specs in a reasonably priced package is all you need, then the Mi 8 SE would be for you. The Vivo NEX A does offer some remarkable upgrades such as a better battery, higher internal storage, larger notch-less display and a flashy pop-up camera. But at almost twice the price, this phone is only suitable for those who absolutely want those specific features and have that much money to spend.
